Great American apathy

To the Editor:

Thank you for your indictment of the nation in its response to the 11-year war in Afghanistan.

The great American apathy is a response to the life we are living in America. The great mass of American people is so terrified of so many things that positive, creative thought cannot endure. Problem solving is soluble in fear and shame.

If we really looked at what is being done in our names and in the name of our security, we would be shamed to an intolerable degree. Who could bear looming poverty, destruction of our incredibly beautiful earth, or unmanned vehicles that kill wantonly?

Who could bear the yoke of the rich and powerful, stomach crude lies and manipulations in all forms of public communication or tolerate the destruction of our cherished values? Shutting down is a psychologically sanity-saving move. It is how we got so apathetic.

It is time for a new beginning. Romney or Obama or their disrespective parties cannot make a new beginning. In November, my vote will go to the Green Party. It is a down payment on the new beginning.
