Voting

To the Editor:

I hear on the radio that the people who elected Barak Obama are disillusioned and may not even vote this year. This discourages me beyond measure.

In a democracy, voting is the great equalizer. It is the one instance where poor people have more power than rich people. It is the only instance where the grassroots have more power than the 1%. The majority has more power than the minority.

Women have more power than men (because there are about four million more of us). This is because, in voting, the winning numbers come from population, not from income or portfolios.

I have a dream: that everyone who can vote does vote, that we do not take our democracy for granted, and that a government of the people, by the people, and for the people is a reality not just an eloquent phrase.

Wouldn't it be amazing, if on November 7, we learn that 99% of all eligible voters in Maine went to the polls? How about 100%? That would be a dream come true.
