Welcome back winter

While we didn't get the 30-plus inches that stalled Portland, or the 40 or more that pummeled central Connecticut, Nemo was still a wonderful reminder that winter is still part of our lives.

It was one of those big storms people prepare for. Schools, businesses and offices closed early on Friday so people could stock up on provisions and head home before the worst of the storm hit.

Throughout Saturday, some of us were snowed in at our homes, staying warm by the fire and watching the flakes fly outside.

On Sunday, the clouds lifted and a brilliant blue sky encouraged us to get out in the fresh powder that had transformed the landscape into a welcoming, pillowy winter playground.

A few weeks ago, when temperatures surged almost into the 50s and rain diminished the measly few inches of snow into a dirty smear, some of us despaired that the ferocious winters of our childhood were a thing of the past.

Last year's shocking non-winter only heightened that fear.

For those of us who love winter, cold and snowstorms, waking up to snow pasting the trees Saturday morning was a comforting return to normalcy.

As we watched the drifts pile up past the 12-inch mark, we breathed a sigh of relief and warmly welcomed winter back into our lives.
