Naked man tased, arrested, dog is maced at speedway
OXFORD — A Norway man was arrested on July 4 at the Oxford Plains Speedway after "approaching women and making vulgar and unwanted gestures," while he was naked, said Oxford Police Chief Jon Tibbetts.
John F. Martin, 49, who was intoxicated and had a dog with him at the time, was tased, arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, Tibbetts said, after both he and the dog failed to cooperate with officers.
Bradley Stuart, 56, Norway, who was also naked when the call was made, was issued a trespass warning not to return to the property. The two men were camping in the woods by the speedway when the incident happened around 4 p.m.
"The dog began to bark and was aggressive toward Lieutenant Ward and Trooper Wing," said Tibbetts. "Trooper Wing maced the dog, and that took care of the dog."
"It [the effect] didn't last long, but it did calm it down," he said. Police then called the local Animal Control Officer, who detained the dog and took it to the animal shelter.
Ward said he was working at the track when he got a report of "two naked male subjects on the wood line."
According to Ward, Martin approached a female racer at the speedway while naked and made obscene gestures toward her. The woman then approached Ward, who was working at the front gate, and that was when Ward went over to check out what was happening, he said.
Ward said that once he arrived on scene, however, Stuart had been dressed. "He wasn't very cooperative with me," said Ward, "and the other guy was laying in the woods, with a dog and he was partially dressed."
Oxford Police Officer Alan Coffin and State Trooper Jason Wing assisted Ward with the call.
