Republicans elect officers
NORWAY — On Tuesday, January 8, at the Norway Masonic Lodge, the Oxford County Republican Committee (OCRC) held its first monthly dinner/business meeting of 2013.
Biennial officer election was the first order of business, with the following results: Chairman - Glen Holmes; Northern Region V.C. – Carlene Tremblay; Central Region V.C. – Tim Turner; Southern Region V.C. – Gino Valeriani; Secretary – Barbara Robinson; Treasurer – Tom Winsor; Finance Director – Tom Curtis; Communications Director – Sawyer Coleman; Parliamentarian – Jarrod Crockett.
Those elected will serve a term of two years and are eager to set an agenda for that period. All of the elected candidates have served in positions of responsibility before and the election results were met with a great deal of applause and enthusiasm.
In addition to the election of officers, attending the meeting was Richard Cebra of Naples who was recently elected in Augusta by the Maine State Republican Committee to become Chairman of the Maine Republican party. He fills the shoes recently held by Charlie Webster who decided not to seek reelection thereby allowing him to spend more time on his business activities.
Mr. Cebra’s speech was well received and was centered on what we must do as a political party to get our message of personal and fiscal responsibility out to the public in a way that will resonate.
His primary goal will be to help all county committees get more Republicans elected to state offices and, in doing so, urged all attendees to work hard from a “grass roots” level with election results always being primary in mind.
Also attending the meeting was Adam Mahar of Rumford, a freshman at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Mr. Mahar is the first recipient of the Oxford County Young Republican Scholarship award.
He was given by Tom Curtis, former Chairman of the OCRC, a check for $500.00 representing the scholarship that he was awarded back in May 2012. The actual monetary value of the scholarship is not given to the recipient until that recipient’s first semester grades are made known to the OCRC.
Other business that was discussed were arrangements for our annual Lincoln Day Dinner, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, February 16, at Four Seasons in South Paris. Music and a speaker have yet to be scheduled but more information about this much anticipated event will be made known to all in short order.
The By-laws Committee and the Scholarship Committee, both working industriously on their appointed projects, also gave updated reports on their progress.
