OHCHS students learn Chinese

OXFORD HILLS — This year at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School the students have the option of taking Mandarin I – a year-long course focusing on the Chinese language – or a semester-long class, Chinese Language and Culture.

Both were developed by history teacher Craig Blanchard for Xie Xiandan, the Chinese teacher, to teach while she is here.

Xiandan was sent from the sister school in Jinhua, China. Her Chinese name is Xie Xiandan, Which in English means Grace.

Xiandan teaches students about the culture in China and how to write and read simple things.

“I love teaching in America,” she says. “It's been a great experience.”

Xiandan teaches three classes with about 15 students in each class. She starts out by teaching the class China’s history, like its famous cities and foods.

The students learn more about how to write and speak in Chinese in the year-long Mandarin class. This semester, students went to Boston to learn more about China in a hands-on approach.

The students taking Chinese Language and Culture or Mandarin visited Boston's Chinatown. This visit consisted of having an authentic Chinese lunch at Hei La Moon Restaurant, where primarily they ate a Dim Sum meal, which consists of a number of small pastries of different shapes and colors.

This was followed by a two-hour tour of Chinatown. The students visited a Chinese bakery, grocery and medicine shop. They learned what some of the traditional Chinese remedies were, then after the tour, walked to Quincy Market for shopping and dinner before their return home.

“I love their creativity”, says Xiandan, of her students. “They are always active and participating."

Xiandan hopes to get more students to take the class because she feels as though it is a great addition to the high school's course selection and a great opportunity to learn new things, unlike those who do not get to have this opportunity.
