4-H recognizes outstanding volunteers

PARIS — The University of Maine Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development program has recognized volunteers Roberta Andrews and Barbara Whittemore, and 4-H members Alyssa Andrews and Angela Packard for outstanding service.

They received plaques at an annual 4-H Oxford County Achievement ceremony held recently to celebrate the year's accomplishments by 4-H youth and volunteers.

Andrews, a leader of the Discovery 4-H Club, assists 4-H members in preparing exhibits for the New England Center at The Big E agricultural fair in West Springfield, MA, in addition to year-round activities showcased through club exhibits at county fairs.

Whittemore leads the UMaine Extension 4-H Friends, Family and Fun Club, and helps with hands-on learning activities, including youth raised-bed gardening, cooking, sewing, woodworking and art. Discovery 4-H and Friends, Family and Fun clubs both have received Outstanding Club Exhibit Awards at the Fryeburg Fair.

Alyssa Andrews, president of the Discovery 4-H Club, has been in 4-H since she was five. She is active in local, county and state 4-H events, including Citizenship Focus in Washington, DC. She also is a member of the National Honor Society and the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School ski team.

Angela Packard is a member of Oxford County Teen Exchange and Hebron Heartbreakers. She has exhibited many projects at county fairs, participated in The Big E New England Center program and traveled to Tennessee as part of the 4-H Teen Exchange. A 4-H member since she was five, Packard is active in school activities and cheerleading.

UMaine Extension 4-H is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year. For information about 4-H programs, contact Susan Jennings or Becky Mosley at the UMaine Extension Oxford County Office, 800-287-1482 or 743-6329.
