NORWAY — A public interest, "School of the Americas," will be held on Sunday, October 28, at Fare Share Commons on 443 Main Street in Norway. There will be food and refreshments at 5 p.m. and the program starts at 6 p.m.
A short film will be shown followed by discussion. School of the Americas is the place at Fort Benning, GA, where the U.S. military trains military personnel from Latin America.
The curriculum gives ample attention to dealing with political oppositions. Beginning in 1948, the school now carrying a different name has helped prepare over 65,000 soldiers and police to serve U.S. purposes in their own countries. Many have ended up as dictators, murderers and human rights abusers.
Fr. Roy Bourgeois founded the School of the Americas Watch in 1990, with the purpose of closing the school down. "School of assassins," he calls it. It costs U.S. taxpayers $30 million a year.
Every year School of Americas Watch holds a vigil and demonstration outside the Fort Benign gate. Over 250 non-violent protesters have gone to jail on these occasions. The vigil this year takes place on November 16-18, in Columbus, GA. Maine people are going.
