Thomas Flotte, MD presents at Dixon Lecture

NORWAY — The annual Walter G. Dixon Lecture was held on Monday, September 24 in the Harper Conference Center of Stephens Memorial Hospital. This year's topic, presented by Dr. Thomas Flotte, was on rare skin cancers.

Dr. Flotte discussed several cases of uncommon skin lesions to help physicians better diagnose these seldom seen cancers. Dr. Thomas Flotte was educated at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Albany Medical College. He trained in Anatomic Pathology at New York University and in Dermatopathology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

He remained on the staff of Massachusetts General Hospital for 25 years and was the Chief of Dermatopathology and had an active federally-funded research program in laser-tissue interactions. He had joint appointments at Harvard and MIT. He was recruited to the Mayo Clinic as a dermatopathologist in 2007.

Dr. Flotte has authored more than 185 papers and co-edited two books on dermatopathology. He is currently a Consultant at the Mayo Clinic, a Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the Mayo College of Medicine and has a joint appointment in Anatomic Pathology and Dermatology.

Walter Dixon, MD was an orthopedic surgeon at Stephens Memorial Hospital for 45 years, retiring in 1984. The medical staff of Stephens Memorial Hospital established the Dixon Fund in honor of Dr. Dixon’s years of service, to help defray the cost of speakers coming to the area for continuing medical education for physicians and staff. The first Dixon lecture was held in 1986 and has become an annual event.
