Generous nine-year-old helps RPC
NORWAY — Kara Chantal Moxcey turned her joy of reading into the joy of giving by raising money for Responsible Pet Care with her own read-a-thon.
Kara is nine years old and loves to read. When she joined the “ Dream Big, Read!” summer reading program at Norway Memorial Library she thought it would be a good idea to raise money for a charity while she was reading.
Kara solicited pledges from her mother, father, grandmother, grandfather and neighbor. She requested that they pay for each hour she read throughout her summer vacation. At the end of her vacation, Kara had read for 177 hours and earned $90.
“I can read anywhere...except on roller coasters!” Kara said. “This summer I did most of my reading when I was camping in Oxford and Old Orchard Beach. I also got a lot of reading done when we were driving to New York.”
There were too many books for the fourth grade student at Guy E. Rowe Elementary School to keep track of, but her favorite book was "Turtle in Paradise" by Jennifer L. Holm.
The idea to donate money to Responsible Pet Care, a shelter and adoption center for cats and dogs located in Norway, came from her mother, Ivy. Ivy suggested Responsible Pet Care because it is close to their home and Kara loves animals.
There are three pets in the Moxcey household: Baron, a 10-year-old German Shepard, Romeo, a four-year-old Airedale Terrier, and a guinea pig named Zoe.
After going to Responsible Pet Care to present her donation check and interacting with the cats, Kara was inspired to become a volunteer at the shelter. She has recently joined Girl Scouts and hopes to earn the Presidential Volunteer Service Award pin by doing 50 hours of service.
“Now that I have been to RPC I want to volunteer there every week,” Kara said. “I really enjoy playing with the cats and feeding them treats.”
