NEWELL SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED — Robert Hand and Mary Jane Newell present the Zach Newell Scholarship to Carl Van Nest.

NORWAY — Stephens Memorial Hospital Vice President for Community Relations and Development, Barbara Allen, announced a scholarship from the Zach Newell Scholarship Fund was awarded recently to Carl Van Nest to help advance his educational efforts from an EMT to a paramedic.

It is fitting that the Zach Newell Scholarship was presented on September 11, a day to honor those lost as well as emergency first responders.

The Zach Newell Scholarship was established by Stanley and Mary Jane Newell in memory of their son, Zach who aspired to become an EMT.

Carl has been employed by PACE since 2007 and is currently an EMT – Intermediate. He is enrolled in a 10-month paramedic program which includes approximately 400 hours of classroom training and an additional 400 hours of clinical experience in the hospital and on an ambulance with a paramedic.

Following successful completion of the class, a comprehensive test is administered by the National Registry to obtain a paramedic license.

Carl expressed his appreciation, “I'd like to thank the Newell family for the generous donation toward my Paramedic training to follow in the footsteps of Zach's dream. I look forward to the challenges of working as a Paramedic. It certainly has been a lot of work and the Newell family's help is greatly appreciated.”

Mrs. Newell shared, “We are very glad to do this. This is what Zach would have wanted.” The Zach Newell Scholarship provides scholarship assistance for PACE EMT’s at Stephens Memorial Hospital to further their training.

Of the scholarship and Carl, Robert Hand, Director of PACE, shared, “Becoming a Paramedic is not an easy road. The training is rigorous and takes a great deal of time away from your family.

There is also a significant financial toll. It is wonderful to be able to celebrate the life of Zach Newell, who had planned on becoming an EMT, through his scholarship and ease some of the burden on Carl.

Carl is a dedicated provider and I'm sure he will continue to be an asset to our community. The Newell family truly has helped us all by helping Carl.”
