September is Hunger Action Month

PORTLAND — It’s an issue that almost 49 million people in the US have to face on a year-round basis – but during the month of September everyone can do their part to help raise awareness on hunger in this country.

Good Shepherd Food Bank will be kicking off the month at the Portland Sea Dogs game on September 1 with a food drive sponsored by Travelers. Former Red Sox player Fred Lynn will throw the first pitch and Travelers will then present the Food Bank with a donation.

The issue of hunger is of particular importance in Maine where 200,000 people, or 15 percent of households, do not have access to enough food. Nationally, there are almost 49 million who struggle with hunger – including 16 million children.
