Public interest forum slated
NORWAY — A public interest forum "Assault on Jeju — Island of Peace," a film showing and presentation by Regis Tremblay, will be held on Thursday, March 21, at 7 p.m. at Fare Share Commons, 443 Main Street in Norway.
Regis Tremblay is a documentary filmmaker from Woolwich. He just returned from Jeju Island, South Korea, where he filmed the documentary, "Jeju — In the Crosshairs of War."
For five years, residents of Gangjeong village on Jeju have been protesting plans and now construction of one of the largest naval bases in the world. There is this background:
• Jeju islanders suffered deadly persecution following World War II.
• Jeju is on UNESCO's World Heritage List because of its remarkable biodiversity.
• The proposed naval base serves the U.S. government's military turn toward Asia.
• Resistance by Gangjeong people is unrelenting, principled and valiant.
There will be refreshments. For more information, call Tom Whitney at 743-2183.
The Public Interest Forum meets monthly to explore political, social and cultural issues bearing on democracy.
