EMS code protocol training offered
OXFORD HILLS — In 2011, Maine EMS protocols, with regard to the termination of resuscitation, changed.
The new protocol, simplified, requires termination of efforts after 20 minutes of unresponsiveness.
Prior to the change, ambulance services would effect a "rapid extrication and trip to the hospital," said PACE Director Robert Hand.
Maine Regional Medical Director for EMS, Dr. Rebecca Chagrasulis, revised the protocol in December of 2011. The new protocol also supported on site CPR, defibrillation and administration of meds which is far more effective for patients and far less dangerous for ambulance personnel than loading and driving and attempting CPR.
Along with the change also came the requirement to terminate after 20 minutes of specific treatment without results.
According to Hand, the ability to stay put enables paramedics to treat a patient faster with more likelihood of success. "It is exactly like ER treatment," said Hand, "only immediate. We do everything the ER can do." This goes a long way in the success rate paramedics have.
However, along with this comes the other side. When all the treatment available fails, and it is clear the patient will not respond.
Then the paramedics not only have the responsibility to terminate treatment, they must do it with family members watching.
This makes the whole process much more emotional and stressful. Paramedics have been highly trained to administer treatment. However, the emotional side requires training as well.
To this end, PACE is sponsoring a workshop on April 24 from 6-8 p.m. for all EMS personnel to train in learning to help the family.
On hand will be social workers who will help EMS personnel with family discussions, grieving families, protocol, resource information and will conduct a Q & A period.
The training will be at the Harper Conference Center at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.
