VFW auxiliary visits veterans

AREA — "Deck The Halls with Boughs of Holly" resounded throughout the corridors of the Veterans Home in South Paris recently. The carolers comprised of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 9328, Santa Claus and guests also brought bundles of gifts that were carefully placed around the facility’s dining hall Christmas tree.

Individuals in the group took time to stop and shake hands while expressing appreciation to each of the veterans for his/her service to our country and added a hearty “Merry Christmas,” before bidding them farewell.

“It is such a pleasure to have our vets join in the singing with us, which many of them did,” Judy Gaouette, of Harrison, commented. “It touches your heart when you see them smiling and taking part. They all gave so much; what we do seems like such a small thing,” she added.

Auxiliary members participating were Judy Gaouette, Ellen Bernier, Kelly Phillips and Muffett Crowell. Added guests were Pete Gaouette, Cody Phillips and WWII Veteran Franklin Flanders, Cody’s grandfather and of course, Santa Claus.

The Ladies Auxiliary continued the following day, spreading their good cheer and singing to the veterans at the Bridgton Health Care Center. They prepared lots of home baked goodies and refreshments that were served to the veterans and their family members in the festively decorated dining hall.

Santa Claus arrived, ringing his melodious golden sleigh bells and distributed gifts to the veterans during the event.

“Smiles were seen on all their faces, and it was wonderful to hear them join in the singing,” stated Sharon Wilson, ladies auxiliary member who helped coordinate the event.

Others participating were Bev Martin, Phyllis Stanton and Muffett Crowell. Dea Dea Robbins, activity director at the Health Care Center, graciously assisted the ladies and requested that they return next year. The date and time was marked on the 2013 calendar.
