STONEHAM — The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865, Hannah F. Richardson Tent 19 of Stoneham, held their monthly meeting on September 26, at the Community Room in Stoneham.
Department President Elsie Bonney and Department Junior Vice President Vicky Myers were guests. Elaine Lagueux, Cayla Heath and Sylvia Grover served as officers pro-tem in the absence of Deanna Merchant, Wanda Ryerson and Dayle Burnell. The mystery prize went to Sylvia Grover.
Lou Ureneck was the guest speaker for the evening and he spoke on the recent book he has written titled "Cabin," the story of two brothers, a dream and five acres in Maine. He was accompanied by his wife and son.
After the program a birthday cake was presented to Marjorie Nihan and everyone enjoyed refreshments and good conversation. The next meeting will be held October 24, at 6 p.m. at the home of Marilyn Jones in Norway.
Mended Hearts
LEWISTON — Mended Hearts, a patient-run support group for heart disease patients and their families, will meet on October 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Young Wing First-Floor Conference Room, located near the main entrance to Central Maine Medical Center. There is no charge for participation. Anyone interested in learning more about Mended Hearts is urged to call 795-8230 or e-mail StroutCh@cmhc.org. Mended Hearts is affiliated with the American Heart Association.
Legion
NORWAY — Stone-Smart Unit 82 American Auxiliary held its September meeting with Thelma Denlinger presiding. Department Chairman Lucille Allen spoke on the Auxiliary Emergency Fund. Chaplain Marcy Dullea reported that she has mailed six sympathy cards and delivered 22 birthday cards to the Maine Veterans' Home in South Paris.
Donations were made to: Norway Firemen's Relief Fund, Beulah Ayer for gas money as she has made many trips to Boston to see her eye doctor, to Barbara Henley, Children and Youth chairman, for Education Week at the Guy E. Rowe School as she will be taking school supplies and a basket of treats for teachers to the school, to the Post to help pay for security lights at the Post and at Veterans' Memorial Park and to the Auxiliary Emergency Fund.
It was voted to pay assessments for the coming year.
The meeting was preceded by an Italian supper, co-chaired by Thelma Denlinger and Kathy Neary.
Swingin’ Bears
PARIS — The Swingin' Bears Square Dance Club of South Paris announces its October dance which will be on Saturday night the 13th at the Oxford Hills Middle School, 100 Pine St., South Paris, from 7–10 p.m.
The caller and cuer for the evening will be the husband and wife team, Kip and Linda Moulton of Scarborough. The level of square dancing will be Mainstream and Plus. The round dancing will be the cuer's choice.
Refreshments will be served at intermission. There will be door prizes and a Pot O' Gold drawing. Admission is $6 per person. Non-dancers are welcome at no charge.

Finnish-American
WEST PARIS — The Finnish-American Heritage Society of Maine will hold its regular meeting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 21, at the Finnish-American Heritage Center on 8 Maple Street in West Paris.
A brief business meeting will be followed by a program and a coffee social. The library, gift shop and museum will be open. The public is invited to attend.
Heywood
NORWAY — The Heywood Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, at Bea Smith's home on 19 Bear Way, the first right off Jackson Lane on North Pond.
Jennifer Wixon will be speaking about writing and publishing and presenting her book "Hens and Chickens." For more information, call Barbara Townsend at 743-7086.
Bee Club
NORWAY — The Oxford Hills Honey Bee Club's next workshop is Saturday, October 20, at 1 p.m. at the Oxford County Extension on 9 Olson Road in South Paris.
The topic will be questions and answers on how to put your bees away for the winter and what to do in preparation for a deep freeze. Also the club is going to vote on a new location for the meetings/workshops.
The club is getting too big for the present location and if the vote is accepted, the new location will be the Unitarian Universalist Church on 479 Main Street in Norway. For more information, call John Seilonen at 743-5009 or e-mail Kevin Farr at farrout@roadrunner.com.
Historical Society
WEST PARIS — The West Paris Historical Society is pleased to report that the hall and yard sale is over and done and was very successful monetarily. The Society wishes to thank all the donors and customers.
The Society will have the regular hunters' breakfast on Saturday, October 27, from 5 to 8 a.m. with a black powder rifle raffle being drawn at 8 a.m.
These tickets only sell during the breakfast hours so it is a great opportunity to win. The breakfast is open to any and all families with a cost of $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under.
The October meeting will start at 5 p.m. at Frank and Mary Perham's house to see his mineral collection of many generations.
This could run until 6:30 p.m. and then it's back to the hall for dessert and coffee and an important business meeting to follow with election of officers, Christmas sale committee and much more.
