Waterford fundraiser is for Heifer International
WATERFORD — The Waterford Congregational Church is sponsoring its annual Harvest Potluck Supper and Decorated Pumpkin Contest. The event will be held at the Wilkins House on Friday, October 26 at 6 p.m. Following the supper, the children will be invited to parade around and show off their Halloween costumes.
Adults and children are invited to paint, carve or decorate a pumpkin and bring it for the contest. Everyone will be invited to put money in a dish in front of their favorite pumpkins. The pumpkin with the most money will be the winner and its owner will have a picture taken for the newspapers.
All money collected will go to the Heifer International Fund which gives gifts of cattle, sheep, rabbits, llamas, geese and many other farm animals and fowl. These gifts are given in the U.S. and all over the world. The organization works to ensure that the gift of each animal will eventually help an entire community to become self sustaining.
The family is free to sell products once its needs have been met. They are required to "Pass on the Gift" by giving at least one offspring to a neighbor and so the pass on begins.
After last year's pumpkin contest, the Sunday School children were able to purchase a water buffalo, a flock of chicks and honeybees. The children are very anxious to see what they will be able to buy this year.
Everyone is welcome to attend this event. Bring a dish to share and also bring friends and neighbors. The Wilkins House is located next to the church on Plummer Hill behind the Common in Waterford Flat. For more information, call Nancy at 583-6677 or Myra at 583-4079.
