Universalist

WEST SUMNER — Preparations are underway for the beginning of the summer church season at the West Sumner Universalist Society, located on Main Street, Route 219, about a half-mile from Pleasant Pond at the very top of the hill.

Marilyn Hammond will open with a service of Universalist Communion on July 8, at 11 a.m. The service will contain some historical notes, an occasion for the remembrance of Jesus' life and teachings.

There will be a christening service held at 11 a.m. on August 5, with Reverend Scott Jones officiating. Anyone wishing to have their child or themselves christened, call Pauline Kirschner at 388-2020.

The church Restoration Committee, a fundraising arm of the church, is still accepting donations to assist in maintaining the church. Present extensive plans include raising enough money to paint the interior of the church which will be a long, but worthwhile task. To help with the cost of the badly needed painting of the sanctuary, there will be a food sale and a whatever sale on August 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tables will be rented for $10. Anyone having new items to donate can contact Pauline Kirschner at 388-2020. Donated items will gladly be picked up. Anyone wishing to cook for the food sale would be very much appreciated.

Founded over 100 years ago, the church has a proud history of both a religious institution and also a meeting and gathering place for reunions, birthday and anniversary celebrations. A building with such a prominent place in the history of the community needs support to enable its existence for the generations to come. All are most welcome to attend and participate.
