January 24

ORIENTATIONS TO SERVICES  Hosted by the WMCA CareerCenter in So. Paris.  1:30 p.m. at 4 Western Ave., So. Paris.   If you lack skills to seek new employment and were laid off from your last job or are low income, you will want to attend and find out how the CareerCenter can help.  There are upcoming, occupationally based training programs in the Oxford Hills starting in January 2013.   FMI call 743-7763 ext. 1.    People may also stop at the Norway Memorial Library on Mon.  or Wed. from 10 a.m.-noon and get more information from CareerCenter staff as they host walk-in hours during this time. 

PUBLIC FORUM  "Protecting Land"  7 p.m. at  at Fare Share Commons, 443 Main St., Norway.    Lee Dasher will talk about the Western Foothills Land Trust, where she serves as executive director.  She will discuss the land trust movement in Maine, and nationally. MOTHER/SON DANCE  Proceeds will help send the Scouts of Pack 130 to summer camp this year. 6-9 p.m. at the So. Paris Legion Hall, Church St.  No age limit.  Tickets are $12 per mother and son and if you have more than one son the total price is $15.   Tickets are available at Guy E. TEXAS HOLD'EM  Sponsored by the Sons of the American Legion with proceeds will go to fund current and future programs of the American Legion and the Sons of the American Legion.  Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the games will start at 6 p.m. and go until it's over.  Buy in will be $35.  Food will be available at the kitchen.   In addition, there will be a door prize to be drawn just before the games begin.  This will also be a BYOB event for those who might prefer that option.  FMI call 539-2649.

MONTHLY PROGRAM  7-9 p.m. in the Community Room at  Alvin Bolster Ricker Library, Rte. 26, Poland.  This is the first of 12 free  monthly programs.  Claire Walker will be presenting a retrospective of Jane Ricker, the wife of Mr. Ricker and a good friend of Mrs. Walker.

JONES BAND  7-10 p.m. at the Legion Hall, Church St., So. Paris.  Cost is $5 for adults to dance to old fashioned dance music.

POSABILITIE OPEN HOUSE  9-10:15 a.m.  Vinyasa Yoga practice led by Kathryn Gardner,  followed by a Therapeutic Yoga class 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. with Katey Hawse and a Zumba class 1:30-2:30 p.m. lead by Carley Packard at 15 Tannery St., Norway.  Classes are free and open to the public.  Public is invited to come in  and tour the therapy clinic and studio spaces from 1-4 p.m.  Complementary massages offered by Katey Branch and complementary energy work from Anne Smith  will be available from1-3 p.m.  Light, healthy snacks and beverages will be offered during the open house.  Posabilities is owned and operated by Katey Hawse and will offer physical therapy and yoga therapy services, and a variety of yoga classes.  FMI please visit posabilities4u.com, or call 743-0930 or e-mail posabilities4u@gmail.com.

TICKET AUCTION  Proceeds to benefit the OH Girls Basketball program.  Doors open at 11 a.m. and tickets drawn at 1 p.m. at OHMS, Pine St., So. Paris.  Lots of great items, gift certificates, and experiences to be won.  Concessions and lunch will be available.

SNOW FEST  Sponsored by the Norway Trackers Snowmobile Club.  9 a.m.-sundown on Norway Lake.   2 days of snowmobile racing, radar runs, grudge matches, and an antique snowmobile exhibition and parade. Food court on the ice both days features hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chowder, chili, desserts, and soft drinks. Food and fun for the whole family.  FMI go to www.norwaytrackers.com.

BRIGID WHITNEY-GALLAGHER  11 a.m. guest speaker at the 1st Unitarian Universalist Church of Norway, 479 Main St.   Brigid is a local writer and poet.  In addition to writing, she works with children who have disabilities. Brigid will be speaking on “The Things We Hold.”   Using original writing, Brigid will explore memory, emotion and the unconscious believes that shape our lives.  Childcare is provided and social hour follows the service.

LAKE CHRISTOPHER Neighborhood  6 p.m. meeting  with 4-H/UMaine camp director Ron Fournier at the Woodstock Town Office.  All are welcome to come and talk with Ron and discuss the programs and activities at the camp, and give input into neighborhood concerns.   FMI call  Jan at 665-2233.

TAR SANDS  7 p.m. meeting at the Waterford Town Office, 366 Valley Rd., Waterford.  Learn more about tar sands oil and how it effects Waterford.  There will be a brief presentation followed by questions and answers.  FMI call  Ray at 583-6613.

February 3

WINTER FUN Day  Sponsored by the Waterford World's Fair.  10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Highview Farm, 48 Leader Harmon Rd., Harrison. Dig out your warm clothes — hats, mittens, boots and a warm jacket.  The Fair mobile food wagon will be serving corn and fish chowder, beans and hot dogs, fried dough, meatball subs and brownies for dessert. If you want you can cook your hot dog or marshmallows on the bonfire which will be going all day.   Bill will be giving sleigh rides for $5 per person and then you can go sledding on the big hill in front of the farm. SOCRATES CAFE   6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Waterford Library.  Group offers a forum to discuss current topics and ideas in a warm, friendly atmosphere, where divergent views will be welcome. GENEALOGY 101  1-2:30 p.m. at Norway Memorial Library.  Program will provide information about the basics of genealogy research and how your local and state library can help you get started on researching your family’s history. An introduction to Ancestry.com, a resource made available free of charge to Maine citizens through MARVEL, Maine’s Virtual Library will be included. The program will be led by Emily Schroeder. eBOOKS, eREADERS/TABLETS  6:30 p.m. at the Paris Public Library, Market Sq.  This will be an interactive session where you can learn how to download eBooks from the library, learn about other eBook sources, and obtain more general help using your device.  eReader and tablet assistance on a “drop-in” basis  will be provided on Mondays, from 9 a.m.- 6 p.m..  Just bring in your device and any questions that you may have. FMI call the at 743-6994 or e-mail paris.public.library@msln.net.  SCHOOLHOUSE ART Center  7 p.m. annual meeting in the Watchic Lake Room at Standish Town Hall, 175 Northeast Rd.  Anyone interested in the future of the Arts in the community is encouraged to attend the meeting. (Rte. 121), Casco.    Cost is $7 for adults and $ for children.  Enjoy homemade baked beans, franks, casseroles, salads, brown bread, beverages and  homemade pies. 

FUNDRAISER SUPPER  Sponsored by the Hebron  Historical Society to raise money for its building fund,  All proceeds will be double matched by Norway Savings. Bank.   4-6 p.m. at the Hebron Fire House, Rte. 119.  Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for under 12.  Meal will feature chicken and turkey pot pie with vegetable, salad, biscuits, dessert and beverage - eat in or take out.  Greenwood Mountain Inn and Chef Daryel Rosario will be supplying much of the food and some of the raffle prizes.
