Meetings, events, classes

January 10

WHITMAN MEMORIAL Library  2 p.m. speaker at the library, Woodstock. Arla Patch will speak about the Maine Wabanaki and State child welfare and Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).  She has been serving on the commission subcommittee since last January and will share a powerpoint, giving an historical overview and current goals.  TRC is being formed in Maine to discover the truth about the experience of Wabanaki people with State welfare programs and to promote healing and lasting change for the children taken from their families.  Open to the public at no charge and light refreshments will be served.

January 11,  25

TEXAS HOLD'EM  Sponsored by the Sons of the American Legion with proceeds will go to fund current and future programs of the American Legion and the Sons of the American Legion.  Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the games will start at 6 p.m. and go until it's over.  Buy in will be $35.  Food will be available at the kitchen.   In addition, there will be a door prize to be drawn just before the games begin.  This will also be a BYOB event for those who might prefer that option.  FMI call 539-2649.

HONEY BEE Club  1 p.m. meeting at the Oxford County Extension Center, 9 Olson Rd., So. Paris.  9 Olson Road, So Paris, Maine.  Speaker is commercial bee keeper Tony Bachelder.  Public is welcome.  FMI call John at 743-5009 or Kevin at farrout@roadrunner.com.  

HEARTSAVER CPR and First Aid class  10 a.m. at the Oxford Public Safety Bldg., Oxford.  On completion of the one day class you will receive a certificate that is good for 3 years.  This certificate course is accepted for day/child care providers, loggers and any other non-healthcare related professions.  FMI call Patty at 671-4460.

SWINGIN' BEARS  Square Dance Club 7-10 p.m. at OHMS, 100 Pine St., So. Paris. Admission is $6 per person and non-dancers are welcome at no charge.  Ray Hilton will be the caller for Mainstream and Plus levels of square dancing intermingled with some round dancing.  Refreshments will be served at intermission. There will be door prizes and a Pot O' Gold drawing.   FMI call Eleanor at 782-4050.

RABIES/MICROCHIPPING CLINIC  Sponsored by Responsible Pet Care.  9-11 a.m. at the Norway Fire Station.  Cost is $10 for rabies and $25 for microchipping.  Attending veterinarian will be Dr. Suzanne Best.  FMI call 743-8679.

NORWAY HISTORICAL Society  1 p.m. annual meeting in the meeting room at Norway Historical Society.  All members encourage to attend. Snow date is Jan. 19.  Board of Trustees will present a report of the past year’s developments and activities as well as present a vision and ongoing development plans for 2013.  Agenda for the  meeting will include an opportunity for members to ask questions and/or offer suggestions. Minor changes to the bylaws as well as officers for 2013 will be presented for approval by the members. Officers to be elected are: President Sue Denison, Secretary Anita Hamilton and Treasurer Ann Seikman.  Refreshments will include a favorite holiday dessert that Josephine Stone served at Barjo’s. WATERFORD WORLD'S FAIR  2 p.m. meeting at the Waterford Town Office.  Everyone is welcome to attend. 

January 14

GOING VEGAN  6 p.m. at the Harrison Village Library.  Harrison residents Melissa and Ryan Phillips will share their reasons for changing their diet and their experiences and will offer tips, resources, and recipes.  Program is free and open to the public.   FMI call the library at 583-2970.

PATHWAYS THROUGH GRIEF  Sponsored by Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice for adults.  Program is free.  6-7:30 p.m. for 8 weeks in Norway.  Sessions help participants understand the grief process, share feelings and experiences and find hope and comfort. All programs are led by trained bereavement volunteers and/or professional grief facilitators.   You must pre-register by calling the Bereavement Dept. at 777-7740 or 1-800-482-7412.

TROUT UNLIMITED  Mollyockett Chapter  6 p.m. meeting at the Haskell House, 17 E. Main St., So. Paris., next to 1st Congregational Church.   Meeting will feature a talk and fly-tying demonstration by Greg Ponte, former chair of the Maine Council of Trout Unlimited and one of the founders of the Maine TU Trout Camp.  Subject of his discussion will be the Trout Camp, which is held each year at the Evergreens Campground in Solon.  Greg will also conduct a fly-tying demonstration.

BABYSITTING 101  Offered by the Girl Scouts of Maine.   9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. for all girls in Grades 5 and up in the Norway/Paris area at St. Catherine's Church, Norway.    Cost of the program is $6.  There is an additional $12 membership fee for non-Girl Scouts.  (Membership assistance is available for the membership fee.)   Space is limited.  Pre-registration along with payment is necessary by Jan. 11th.  Program will include: getting your baby-sitting business started, playtime ideas for children of all ages, understanding the likes and dislikes of children and troubleshooting and solutions to the most common problems a baby-sitter faces.  Babysitting 101 certification.  FMI or to register, call Jeanie at 364-3639 or 1-888-922-4763, ext. 237 or e-mail jduguay@gsmaine.org.

RABIES CLINIC  10 a.m.-noon at the Sumner Fire Station.  Cost is $10.  Sumner dogs may be licensed at the same time in the fire station.  Bring new spay/neuter certificates or rabies certificates from your vet.

RABIES CLINIC  9-11 a.m. for the towns of Oxford and Otisfield,  at the Station House Rec. Center, 223 King St., Oxford.  Oxford and Otisfield residents will be able to register their dogs at this time.  Please bring your last rabies certificate if you have it.

MARTIN LUTHER KING  Story Time   11 a.m. at the Paris Public Library, Market Sq.   Come and listen to MLK's famous speech in a beautiful new picture book, "I Have a Dream." A companion book will also be read and optional MLK activity/learning sheets will be available.

ORIENTATIONS TO SERVICES  Hosted by the WMCA CareerCenter in So. Paris.  1:30 p.m. at 4 Western Ave., So. Paris.   If you lack skills to seek new employment and were laid off from your last job or are low income, you will want to attend and find out how the CareerCenter can help.  There are upcoming, occupationally based training programs in the Oxford Hills starting in January 2013.   FMI call 743-7763 ext. 1.    People may also stop at the Norway Memorial Library on Mon.  or Wed. from 10 a.m.-noon and get more information from CareerCenter staff as they host walk-in hours during this time. 

PUBLIC FORUM  "Protecting Land"  7 p.m. at  at Fare Share Commons, 443 Main St., Norway.    Lee Dasher will talk about the Western Foothills Land Trust, where she serves as executive director.  She will discuss the land trust movement in Maine, and nationally. MOTHER/SON DANCE  Proceeds will help send the Scouts of Pack 130 to summer camp this year. 6-9 p.m. at the So. Paris Legion Hall, Church St.  No age limit.  Tickets are $12 per mother and son and if you have more than one son the total price is $15.   Tickets are available at Guy E. Rowe School, Paris Elementary School and at Books N Things, Norway. There will also be snacks and a silent auction of local goodies. OIL AWARENESS Movies  Hosted by John O'Brien.  7 p.m. at the Waterford Town Office, 366 Valley Rd., Waterford.   Showings are to raise awareness to the threat of tar sands oil flowing through the Portland Pipeline which runs through Western ME and by Sebago Lake. Waterford residents will gather to watch two films, one in opposition to tar sands and one in support of tar sands. A community conversation and questions and answer session will follow.

February 3

WINTER FUN Day  at the Highview Farm of Bill and Darcy Winslow, Leander Harmon Rd., Harrison( watch for signs in town).  There will be sleigh rides, sledding on the big hill, a campfire to roast hot dogs and marshmallows, hot fish chowder and dough boys will be available, and lots of animals to check out in the barn.

Public Suppers

January 11

SPAGHETTI SUPPER  Hosted by the Oxford Hills Softball Parents.  5-7 p.m. in the Culinary Arts Room at OHCHS.   Cost is 6 for adults and $4 for 12 and under.

January 12

PUBLIC SUPPER   Sponsored by the Paris Fire Dept. Aux.  5 p.m. at the Paris Fire Department, Western Ave. So. Paris.  Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for ages 4-12 and free for under 4.    Supper includes pork roast, mashed potatoes, veggies, macaroni and cheese, salads and homemade desserts.  There will also be a 50/50 raffle as well as raffles for a  $50 gift certificate to Agren Appliance, a fruit basket and a free meal for the next public supper.

TURLEY DINNER   5 p.m. at Deering Memorial Methodist Church, corner of Main and Church St., So. Paris.  Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for under 12. Ample parking behind the library and town office.

BEAN/CASSEROLE SUPPER  Sponsored by Mechanic Falls Aux. Post 150.  5-6:30 p.m. at the Post, Elm St., Mechanic Falls.   Cost is $7 for actuals, $6 for seniors and $3.50 for children.

COMMUNITY LUNCH  11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Otisfield Community Hall, Rte. 121.    Free and donations accepted. Menu will be beef stew, veggie stew, corn bread, salads, dessert, coffee and  tea.  Come and renew old acquaintances and make new friends.  If you need a ride, call Nancy at 627-4374.  If you would like to help, call Dave at 539-4368.

SOUP/CHOWDER FEST  11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at at the E. Otisfield Free Baptist Church, 231 Rayville Rd., off Rte. 121, Otisfield.  This is free.  Rain or snow date is Jan. 26.  Featured will be home cooked soups and chowders, cornbread, dumplings, biscuits, desserts.  Donations appreciated.  FMI call 539-8922.

PUBLIC SUPPER  Sponsored by the Waterford World's Fair Assn.  5-6:30 p.m. at the No. Waterford Congregation Church ( note new location),across the street from Melby's Market, Rte. 35.  Cost is $7 for adults and $3.50 for children.  Supper will be roast pork and all the fixings including drink, rolls and homemade pies around.  There will also be a 50/50 game and everyone that buys a ticket at the supper will get a chance for a free supper on the Feb.  23.
