January 3, 24

ORIENTATIONS TO SERVICES  Hosted by the WMCA CareerCenter in So. Paris.  9 a.m. on Jan. 3, and 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 24,  at 4 Western Ave., So. Paris.   If you lack skills to seek new employment and were laid off from your last job or are low income, you will want to attend and find out how the CareerCenter can help.  There are upcoming, occupationally based training programs in the Oxford Hills starting in January 2013.   FMI call 743-7763 ext. 1.    People may also stop at the Norway Memorial Library on Mon.  or Wed. from 10 a.m.-noon and get more information from CareerCenter staff as they host walk-in hours during this time.

SOCRATES CAFE  6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Waterford Library.  Group offers a forum to discuss current topics and ideas in a warm, friendly atmosphere, where divergent views will be welcome. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.  Topic for this meeting will be ” Does The Earth Have Rights?” Moderator is Jim Kearney.  FMI call 583-6957 or e-mail the library atwla@waterford.lib.me.us.

January 8

SENIOR SOCIAL and Luncheon  Hosted by Harrison Parks and Recreation.    11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Community Room at the fire station.  Cost is $3.  Join in for socializing, word games, Bingo and prizes and a delicious meal featuring spaghetti and meatballs, garden salad, Italian bread, juice and coffee/tea.  Guest speaker will be Ray Laplante.   If you do not have time for socializing and games then please come for the meal noon.  Sponsors/volunteers/donations are always appreciated.   FMI call Paula at 583-2241.

BETHEL SENIOR Citizens  11 a.m. meeting at the Bethel Methodist Church for a potluck meal.  Members will bring a dish to share and also items for the auction to be held as a fundraiser for the club.

HEARTSAVER CPR and First Aid class  10 a.m. at the Oxford Public Safety Bldg., Oxford.  On completion of the one day class you will receive a certificate that is good for 3 years.  This certificate course is accepted for day/child care providers, loggers and any other non-healthcare related professions.  FMI call Patty at 671-4460.

SWINGIN' BEARS  Square Dance Club 7-10 p.m. at OHMS, 100 Pine St., So. Paris. Admission is $6 per person and non-dancers are welcome at no charge.  Ray Hilton will be the caller for Mainstream and Plus levels of square dancing intermingled with some round dancing.  Refreshments will be served at intermission. PATHWAYS THROUGH GRIEF  Sponsored by Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice for adults.  Program is free.  6-7:30 p.m. for 8 weeks in Norway.  Sessions help participants understand the grief process, share feelings and experiences and find hope and comfort. All programs are led by trained bereavement volunteers and/or professional grief facilitators.   You must pre-register by calling the Bereavement Dept. at 777-7740 or 1-800-482-7412.

BABYSITTING 101  Offered by the Girl Scouts of Maine.   9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. for all girls in Grades 5 and up in the Norway/Paris area at St. Catherine's Church, Norway.    Cost of the program is $6.  There is an additional $12 membership fee for non-Girl Scouts.  (Membership assistance is available for the membership fee.)   Space is limited.  Pre-registration along with payment is necessary by Jan. 11th.  Program will include: getting your baby-sitting business started, playtime ideas for children of all ages, understanding the likes and dislikes of children and troubleshooting and solutions to the most common problems a baby-sitter faces.  Babysitting 101 certification.  FMI or to register, call Jeanie at 364-3639 or 1-888-922-4763, ext. 237 or e-mail jduguay@gsmaine.org.

OIL AWARENESS Movies  Hosted by John O'Brien.  7 p.m. at the Waterford Town Office, 366 Valley Rd., Waterford.   Showings are to raise awareness to the threat of tar sands oil flowing through the Portland Pipeline which runs through Western ME and by Sebago Lake. Waterford residents will gather to watch two films, one in opposition to tar sands and one in support of tar sands. A community conversation and questions and answer session will follow.

Public Suppers

January 5

COMMUNITY SUPPER  5 :30 p.m. at the Congregational Church of E. Sumner, 50 Main St.  Donation is requested for the meal. Meal will be chicken enchiladas, corn bread, desserts and drinks. Raffle items will also be available.

January 12

PUBLIC SUPPER   Sponsored by the Paris Fire Dept. Aux.  5 p.m. at the Paris Fire Department, Western Ave. So. Paris.  Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for ages 4-12 and free for under 4.    Supper includes pork roast, mashed potatoes, veggies, macaroni and cheese, salads and homemade desserts.  There will also be a 50/50 raffle as well as raffles for a  $50 gift certificate to Agren Appliance, a fruit basket and a free meal for the next public supper.

TURLEY DINNER   5 p.m. at Deering Memorial Methodist Church, corner of Main and Church St., So. Paris.  Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for under 12. Ample parking behind the library and town office.

MIND THE BODY   Sponsored by Healthy Oxford Hills.  Action and support group meets from 3-4 p.m. every Thu. at the Weary Club, 385 Main St., Norway. Group’s focus is on feeling good physically and mentally. All are welcome to listen, share stories and feel better.  FMI call 739-6222.
