December 31

NEW YEAR'S DANCE  8 p.m.-12:30 a.m. at the So. Paris Legion Hall, Church St. Tickets are $10. Intermission will be at 10 p.m. and refreshments will be served. To reserve a table, call Betty at 743-7965.

BINGO  9 p.m.-midnight at Stone Smart Post 82, 212 Main St., Norway.  Doors open at 7 p.m.   Kitchen will be open for burgers and sandwiches, party favors will be available for the stroke of midnight as well as sparkling cider to toast in the New Year.

JONES BAND  Old fashioned dance music from 7-11 p.m. at the Legion Hall, Church St.,  So. Paris.  Cost is $5 for adults. 

SATURDAY MOVIE  10 a.m. showing of  “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” at the Harrison Library.  Free and open to the public.  FMI call the library at 583-2970.

December 30

SPECIAL MUSIC  10 a.m. at the 1st Universalist Church, Pine St., So. Paris. Special musical selections from the choir and the congregation as well as flute solos by Renee Wales.  As well as celebrating the new year the worship service will also celebrate the lives of those members who passed away in 2012 with candle lightings by family members.  Marilyn Hammond and Sharon Bouchard will facilitate the service.  Coffee and fellowship will follow the worship service and all are welcome.  Childcare is available and the church is wheelchair accessible.

January 3, 24

ORIENTATIONS TO SERVICES  Hosted by the WMCA CareerCenter in So. Paris.  9 a.m. on Jan. 3, and 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 24,  at 4 Western Ave., So. Paris.   If you lack skills to seek new employment and were laid off from your last job or are low income, you will want to attend and find out how the CareerCenter can help.  There are upcoming, occupationally based training programs in the Oxford Hills starting in January 2013.   FMI call 743-7763 ext. 1.    People may also stop at the Norway Memorial Library on Mon.  or Wed. from 10 a.m.-noon and get more information from CareerCenter staff as they host walk-in hours during this time.

SOCRATES CAFE  6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Waterford Library.  Group offers a forum to discuss current topics and ideas in a warm, friendly atmosphere, where divergent views will be welcome. BETHEL SENIOR Citizens  11 a.m. meeting at the Bethel Methodist Church for a potluck meal.  Members will bring a dish to share and also items for the auction to be held as a fundraiser for the club.

PATHWAYS THROUGH GRIEF  Sponsored by Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice for adults.  Program is free.  6-7:30 p.m. for 8 weeks in Norway.  Sessions help participants understand the grief process, share feelings and experiences and find hope and comfort. All programs are led by trained bereavement volunteers and/or professional grief facilitators.   You must pre-register by calling the Bereavement Dept. at 777-7740 or 1-800-482-7412.

BABYSITTING 101  Offered by the Girl Scouts of Maine.   9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. for all girls in Grades 5 and up in the Norway/Paris area at St. Catherine's Church, Norway.    Cost of the program is $6.  There is an additional $12 membership fee for non-Girl Scouts.  (Membership assistance is available for the membership fee.)   Space is limited.  Pre-registration along with payment is necessary by Jan. 11th.  Program will include: getting your baby-sitting business started, playtime ideas for children of all ages, understanding the likes and dislikes of children and troubleshooting and solutions to the most common problems a baby-sitter faces.  Babysitting 101 certification.  FMI or to register, call Jeanie at 364-3639 or 1-888-922-4763, ext. 237 or e-mail jduguay@gsmaine.org.

OIL AWARENESS Movies  Hosted by John O'Brien.  7 p.m. at the Waterford Town Office, 366 Valley Rd., Waterford.   Showings are to raise awareness to the threat of tar sands oil flowing through the Portland Pipeline which runs through Western ME and by Sebago Lake. Waterford residents will gather to watch two films, one in opposition to tar sands and one in support of tar sands. A community conversation and questions and answer session will follow.
