Meetings, events, classes

November 1

MIND THE BODY   Sponsored by Healthy Oxford Hills.  Action and support group meets from 3-4 p.m. every Thu. at the Weary Club, 385 Main St., Norway. Group’s focus is on feeling good physically and mentally. All are welcome to listen, share stories and feel better.  FMI call 739-6222.

SENIORS PREVENTION Program   Sponsored by Western Mountains Senior College.   4-6 p.m. at the Congregational Church, Church St., Bethel, to watch "Good Balance - Staying on Your Feet in Bethel."  Individual balance screening will be held for the first 20 persons who register.  Public is invited.  FMI call Rosabelle at 824-2053.

HISTORICAL Society's One Room Schoolhouse  Open the 1st Thu. of each month from 1-4 p.m. on Rte. 26 at Poland Corner. Public is invited to stop by for a tour or just browse.  FMI call 998-4391.

November 2

CHURCH WOMEN United  9:30 a.m. at the Community of Resurrection, Otisfield.  This is World Community Day and the program is "Sights and Sounds of Harmony." All are welcome and refreshments will be served.  To car pool, meet at 8:45 a.m. at St. Catherine's Church in Norway.

November 3

$1 BAG SALE  10 a.m.-noon at the  Thrift Shop of the Lovell United Church of Christ.

HELPING HANDS Work Days  9 a.m.-noon at McLaughlin Garden, 97 Main St., So. Paris.  Participants have a chance to meet new people, learn new gardening skills, and gain the satisfaction of knowing that the time spent helping is greatly appreciated.  Kristin Perry guides volunteers in learning to identify and reduce weeds, how and when to deadhead and prune, and what and how to compost. She also teaches both common and Latin plant names. Workers leave with tips to use in their own yards.

CRAFT FAIR  Sponsored by Oxford Fire Relief Org.  9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Oxford Public Safety Bldg., Rte. 26.    If you would like to join them contact Dave at 577-2618 for applications.

TICKET AUCTION  Sponsored by Oxford County 4-H.  Doors will open at 4 p.m. and the drawing starts at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria at OHCHS.  Lots of items.

SUSANNA'S TREASURES Fair  9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the vestry at the Minot Methodist Church.  Free coffee will be offered and a luncheon will be served at 11:30 a.m.  Crafts, including knit goods, mittens and decorations will be available as well as Rada products.  The home-baked food will include cookies, cakes, breads, pies, candy and home-canned goods.  There will also be free drawings for door prizes and a silent auction table.

CRAFT FAIR  9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the ME Veterans' Home, 477 High St.,  So. Paris.  There will also be a refreshment counter.

ELMWOOD CEMETERY Association Annual Meeting  1:30 p.m. at the E. Otisfield Baptist Church.

DINNER/CONCERT  Proceeds will help purchase a much needed iPad for legally blind Kiana Bade for her tutoring. All funds raised above the needed amount will go into the Church Benevolence Fund. Supper is from 5-6:30 p.m. and concert at 7 p.m. at Hosanna Church, 109 Schoolhouse Rd., Welchville. Supper donation is $5 for Adults and teens, $3 for elementary grades and free for kindergarten and below.  Concert is free and a love offering will be received.

TEXAS HOLD'EM    Sponsored by the Harrison Lions Club with proceeds to be used to provide services that the Lions Club renders to the community.  Doors open at 11:30 a.m., start time is 1 p.m. and end time is 6 p.m. t the VFW Hall, 176 Waterford Rd., Harrison.  $55 entry fee includes the stipend for the State License fee.  BYOB event is limited to 100 players so come and have some fun.  Food and refreshments will be available.

ART/CRAFT FAIR  Sponsored by the Vendredi Club that raises money to put back into the communities of Casco and Otisfield.  9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Crooked River School, 1437 Poland Spring Rd. (Rte. 11), Casco.  Fair has 40+ artists and crafters with scrapbooking, fairy houses, dolls, stained glass, jewelry, paintings, photography, quilts, baked goods, sewn items, pottery, books, toys and much more.  There will also be a raffle of many of the crafters' donations.

GAMES DAY  National initiative supported by the American Library Assn. . 12-3 at Paris Public Library, So. Paris.  Library will be offering a variety of games for all family members to enjoy.  This year will highlight the game Labyrinth, a race for treasure in a moving maze, provided by Ravensburger. The game is for ages 7- 99 and takes 20- 30 minutes to play. JONES BAND  7-10 p.m. at the Legion Hall, Church St., So. Paris.  Cost is $5 for adults.  Come and have a great time with old fashioned dance music.

November 5

SOCRATES CAFE    6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Waterford Library.  Group offers a forum to discuss current topics and ideas in a warm, friendly atmosphere, where divergent views will be welcome. Coffee and light refreshments will be served. BLOOD DRIVE  12-5 p.m. at the Gibson Recreation Center, Fryeburg.

TWIN TOWN Nature Club   6 p.m. at the Oxford Congregational Church for Founders Day potluck supper.  Leroy Zutter will show some of the pictures taken on the recent foliage viewing trip to the Rangeley area.  Visitors are welcome.  FMI , call John at 539-2902.

PARKS/REC. CAFE  Proceeds benefit year round recreation programs for all ages. 8 a.m.-8 p.m. in the town office garage bays. Enjoy local homemade soups, chowders, chili, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, hot dogs, breads, pies and desserts.

AUTHOR READING    7 p.m. at Norway Memorial Library.  Free and open to the public  Carol L. Welsh will  present a reading from her recently released book,"360 Square: a Memoir of Adoption and Identity."  "360 Square" is Welsh’s story of spirited resilience in the face of unrelenting adversity. Adopted at the age of 6 months by what seemed like model parents, her childhood became harsher and more cruel with each passing year. In spite of that, she never gives up on herself or her desire to understand her fiery passion for life. In her search to trace her roots she finds the true meaning of family and identity.   FMI call the library at 743-5309.

KNITTING GUILD  10 a.m. at the 1st Congregational Church, So. Paris.  Speaker will be Dee Farr teaching a craft. A reminder that mittens for Christmas for Kids are due on Nov. 15.

November 8

SENIOR SOCIAL/LUNCHEON  Sponsored by Harrison Lions Club.  11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Community Room next to the fire station, Harrison.  Free.  Luncheon will feature Thanksgiving shepherd’s pie, gravy, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and beverages. HONEY BEES and Other Pollinators.  2 p.m. at Whitman Memorial Library, Bryant Pond.  Program will be presented by SuzanneDunham.  Suzanne and Brian Dunham have been beekeepers for 5 years.  Suzanne's talk will describe the practice and mysteryof beekeeping, and the importance of honeybees and other pollinators to us and our environment. Program is open to the public at no charge and light refreshments will be served.

OPEN MIC Poetry Slam  7:30 p.m. at the 1st Universalist Church of Auburn, 169 Pleasant St.   This is free.  Refreshments and children's room available.  FMI call 783-0461.

BLOOD DRIVE  12-5 p.m. at Gould Academy in Bethel.

November 11

BETHEL SENIOR CITIZENS  11 a.m. at the Locke Mills Legion Hall.  Dinner menu is chicken pie and the price is $11.

November 12

COLONIAL BRASS Concert  7 p.m. at Norway Memorial Library.  Free and open to the public.  This 6-piece group utilizes a wide repertoire of music from Bach to Sousa to Miles Davis.

November 14

BUSINESS WORKSHOP  Video Conference  5:30-7 p.m. at Norway Memorial Library, Main St.  Program is free and pre-registration is required by 5 p.m. on Nov. 13 by calling the library at 743-5309, ext. 1 or stop by the information desk.   “Reaching Out to Small Business Owners about Filing Requirements and Business Record Keeping for Federal Tax Purposes” will be presented by Shawn Savage via video conference technology.  This program will give small business owners information about IRS resources to help them learn about their federal tax responsibilities and avoid common pitfalls.  It will discuss some basic tips for business owners to avoid potential problems.  There will also be a discussion on how easy it is to find federal tax information when you need it.

AUCTION/SUPPER  Benefit for the Huskies.  Doors open at 4 p.m., spaghetti supper at 5 p.m. and ticket pulling starts at 6:30 p.m. at  the Brownfield/Denmark Elementary School.  Cost is $5 for adults, $3 grades K-5 and free for 4 and under.

FREE CLOTHES  9-11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 34 Buckfield Rd., So. Paris.

CHRISTMAS CUPBOARD  9 a.m.-noon at the Fryeburg New Church, 12 Oxford St.  Event will feature fudge and candy, bake4d goods, knitted items, mittens, handmade crafts, wreaths, white elephants, raffle with three items and much more.  Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.  Drawing will be at noon. Muffins, donut holes, coffee and hot chocolate will be on sale while you shop.

MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET  7:30 p.m. on Nov. 30, Dec. 1, 7, 8, 14 and 15, and 2 p.m. on Dec. 2, 9 and 16, at  Schoolhouse Arts Center, Richville Rd. (Rte,. 114).   Miracle on 34th Street is a heartwarming holiday story about Kris Kringle, an old man in a retirement home, who gets a job working as Santa for Macy's and is great entertainment for the entire family.  Tickets are $14 for adults and $12 for students and seniors.  For tickets, call  642-3743 or  buy online at www.schoolhousearts.org.

CRAFT FAIR  Hosted by the Nezinscot Valley Music Boosters.  9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Buckfield Jr./Sr. High School, Morrill St.

ADVENT FAIR  8-11 a.m. at 34 Buckfield Rd., So. Paris.  Fair will feature Rada knives, food, Christmas decorations, white elephant table and raffle tickets for sale.  Coffee and snacks will be served.

December 11, January 31

OIL AWARENESS Movies  Hosted by John O'Brien.  7 p.m. at the Waterford Town Office, 366 Valley Rd., Waterford.   Showings are to raise awareness to the threat of tar sands oil flowing through the Portland Pipeline which runs through Western ME and by Sebago Lake. Waterford residents will gather to watch 2 films, one in opposition to tar sands and one in support of tar sands. A community conversation and questions and answer session will follow.  

December 12

WINTER CONCERT  Presented by Buckfield Middle School.  6:30 p.m. at the high school, Morrill St.  Snow date is Dec. 14.

December 13

WINTER CONCERT  Presented by Hartford-Sumner El. School.  6:30 p.m. at the school, Sumner.  Snow date is Dec. 17.

Public Suppers

November 3

SUPPER  Proceeds will help support our veterans and their families.   5-6 p.m. at the American Legion, 5 Lewiston Rd., Gray.  Cost will be $7 for adults, $2.50 for children up to 12 years and free for under 5. Supper will include beans, chop suey, cole slaw, hot dogs, breads and desserts. 

SUPPER  Sponsored by the Auxiliary of American Legion Post 150.  5-6:30 p.m. at the Post, Elm St., Mechanic Falls   Menu includes baked beans and casseroles.


TURKEY DINNER  5 p.m. at Deering Memorial Methodist Church, corner of Main and Church St.,  So. Paris.  Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for under 12.  Ample parking behind the library and the town office.

ROAST BEEF Supper   Sponsored by the Mechanic Falls Historical Society with all proceeds to go toward of the maintenance of the society’s building.  4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Society bldg., Elm St.  Cost is $7 for adults and $5 for 12 and under.  Side main dish of roast turkey will also be available.  

SOUP/STEW/CHOWDER  Supper  10% of the profit goes to the Food Pantry.  5-6 p.m. at the 1st Baptist Church of Paris, Paris Hill.  Cost is $7 for adults and $3.50 for 12 and under.   Featured will be homemade soups, stews, chowders, breads, salads, beverages and desserts.  FMI call 754-7970 or 743-8296.

HUNTERS' BREAKFAST  Sponsored by the Auxiliary of American Legion Post 150.  5-9 a.m. at the Post, Elm St., Mechanic Falls. 

PUBLIC SUPPER  Sponsored by the Paris Fire Department Aux.  5 p.m. at the Paris Fire Dept., Western Ave., So. Paris.  Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for ages 4-12 and free for 3 and under.  Supper includes meatloaf, mashed potatoes, veggies, macaroni and cheese, salads, rolls and homemade desserts.   There will also be a 50/50 raffle.

November 11

VETERANS' DAY Supper  Hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary. 4:15 p.m. social hour with meet, greet and thank our veterans and 5-6:30 p.m. dinner at the VFW Post 9328, Harrison.  Donations greatly appreciated.

November 14

PRE-THANKSGIVING LUNCH  Otisfield Social Outreach Committee  11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Otisfield Town Bldg., State Rte. 121.  This is free and the menu includes turkey with all the fixings.  Anybody who wishes to do so can bring and/or take home a white elephant item (small items only, please).
