October 4

MIND THE BODY   Sponsored by Healthy Oxford Hills.  Action and support group meets from 3-4 p.m. every Thu. at the Weary Club, 385 Main St., Norway. Group’s focus is on feeling good physically and mentally. All are welcome to listen, share stories and feel better.  FMI call 739-6222.

EXHIBIT   Photography and acrylic paintings by Milt Inman will be exhibited at the W. Paris Library during library hours.  Milt has loaned the library a sampling of his large collection of photographs, the product of a passion that began at a very young age.

ART SHOW  Presented by the Studio of Landmark Resources.  At the Bridgton Community Center, Depot St.   Art show is self-portraits.  FMI call 647-8396.

POLAND HISTORICAL Society's One Room Schoolhouse  Open the 1st Thu. of each month from 1-4 p.m. on Rte. 26 at Poland Corner.   Public is invited to stop by for a tour or just browse.  FMI call 998-4391.

October 5

GIRL SCOUT Parent Information Night  Hosted by Girl Scouts of ME.   6:30 p.m. at Spurrs Corner Church, Otisfield.  Girls and adults are invited to attend the meeting to find out about the many different and fun ways today’s girls are participating in Girl Scouting and how the programs and activities inspire them to reach their personal best.  Participants will also learn about the flexible options and benefits of becoming a Girl Scout volunteer.  FMI call Beth at 627-7431 or Jeanie  at 364-3639.

CHINESE AUTION    Proceeds to benefit the Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing.   Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the auction starts at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria at OHCHS.   There will also be a 50/50 raffle, a $1 ticket table including two overnight getaways, gift certificates, a bake sale offering up yummy treats throughout the evening and much more.

TEXAS HOLD'EM  6 p.m. at the Mechanic Falls American Legion Post 150, Elm St. $35 Buy-in

October 6

CRAFT FAIR   9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Oxford Hills Assembly, 298 Coldwater Brook Rd., Oxford, rain or shine.  Tables are for rent for $7 or bring your own table and rent a space for $7.  FMI  call Cheryl at 743-5840.

SILENT AUCTION and Wine Tasting  Fundraiser for the library.  6 p.m. inside and outside under a tent  at the Waterford Library.  Tickets are $3 per person or $5 a couple and are available at the library, at Pie Tree Orchard or from Al at 583-4417, Corinna at 583-2724 or Nancy at 583-6551 and also at the door.  A silent auction will be accompanied by a wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres and entertainment by a brass quintet.  Offerings for the auction will include a variety of art works, antiques, hand made items, home made pies, services, gift certificates and much more. Even the old library catalog will be offered for sale. Black tie is optional.  Anyone with items to donate may contact  Nancy at 583-6551.

JONES DANCE Band  7-10 p.m. at the  Legion Hall, Church St., So. Paris, Cost is $5 for adults.

October 7

HOUSE/HALEY Concert   Sponsored by the Deacons of the Oxford County United Parish (No. Waterford and E. Stoneham churches) with proceeds to go to the Deacon's Fund so that they may help anyone needing assistance with fuel or food during the winter.  4 p.m. at the No. Waterford Congregational Church,  Rtes. 35 and 37 and opposite Melby's Market.  There will be a good will offering and light refreshments will be served following the concert.

October 9

SUPPER DANCE  5 p.m. supper at the American Legion Hall, Locke Mills.  Doors open at 4 p.m.  The cost is $7 for adults for the supper and $10 for the supper and dance and $3 for children.  This is a harvest supper with either ham or corned beef and pies.  Music by the Jones Orchestra.

October 11

SENIOR CITIZENS  11 a.m. meeting and dinner at the W, Bethel Grange Hall for a meeting and dinner. Reservations must be made before Oct, 3, by calling Caroline at 824-3226 or Arlene at 824-2877.  Price of the dinner is $10.

WHITMAN Library Program  2 p.m. at the library, Bryant Pond.    Guest speakers will be Robert and Cynthia Kirchherr of So. Paris who will be showing pictures and talking about their trip to So. Africa.  Also sharing pictures and talking about her trip to Namibia will be Elaine Newell of W. Paris.  Elaine spent two weeks in Namibia visiting her daughter who was in the Peace Corps at that time.  These will be two very different and interesting stories about time in Africa.  Free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.

AUTHOR VISIT   7 p.m. at the Paris Public Library.  Steve Pinkham, author of "Old Tales of the Maine Woods," will discuss his research in collecting over 22,000 stories and articles about the Maine woods, and will share a few of the stories the book includes.  "Old Tales of the Maine Woods" offers a variety of stories, from 1849 to 1913, about fishing, hunting, lumbering, camping, canoeing and other adventures in Maine’s northern forests. OPEN MIC Poetry Slam  7:30 p.m. at the 1st Universalist Church of Auburn, 169 Pleasant St.   This is free.  Refreshments and children's room available.   FMI call 783-0461.

HELPING HANDS Work Days  9 a.m.-noon at McLaughlin Garden, 97 Main St., So. Paris.  Participants have a chance to meet new people, learn new gardening skills, and gain the satisfaction of knowing that the time spent helping is greatly appreciated.  Kristin Perry guides volunteers in learning to identify and reduce weeds, how and when to deadhead and prune, and what and how to compost. She also teaches both common and Latin plant names. Workers leave with tips to use in their own yards.

BUCK A BAG Sale  Sponsored by Friends of the W. Paris Library.  8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the W. Paris Historical Society Bldg. across the street from the library.  Sale offers a very large selection of children and adult fiction and nonfiction books as well as movie DVDs.  $1 buys as many books or other items as you can fit in a standard plastic grocery bag. Bags will be available at the sale.  Sale also features refreshments (coffee, tea and muffins), a raffle, note cards depicting samples of paintings from some of the library’s  past art exhibits, handmade bookmarks, and W. Paris Library tote bags.

SWINGIN' BEARS  Square Dance Club  7-10 p.m. at OHMS, 100 Pine St., So. Paris.  Admission is $6 per person.  Non-dancers welcome at no charge.  Caller and cuer for the evening will be the husband and wife team, Kip and Linda Moulton of Scarborough. Level of square dancing will be Mainstream and Plus.  Round dancing will be the cuer's choice.  Refreshments will be served at intermission and there will be door prizes and a Pot O' Gold drawing.   FMI Eleanor at 782-4050.

FOOD FOREST  3-6 p.m. at the Alan Day community garden, Whitman St., Norway.  Scott Vlaun is the leader.

HYMN SING  6:30 p.m. at the 1st  Congregational Church. E. Main St., So. Paris.  Included in the program will be many of the old and new favorite hymns in memory of our loved ones that have passed on or in honor of those who are still with us. 

OCEA-R MEETING  10:30 a.m. at the No. Waterford Congregational Church, Rte. 35.  All retired public school personnel are invited to attend for a brief business meeting before the noon luncheon.  Cost of dinner is $7.   The fundraiser is a book sale, so bring any books in good condition deemed interesting,  John Kimball will be the speaker.

Public Suppers

October 6

PORK SUPPER  5 p.m. at Deering Memorial Methodist Church, 39 Main St., So. Paris.   Supper also includes apple crisp and ice cream.  Cost id $8 for adults and $4 for under 12.  Ample parking behind the library and the town office.

October 13

TURKEY SUPPER  Proceeds to benefit the Rumford Royal  Arch Chapter #56.  5 p.m. at Blazing Star Lodge, Rte. 232, Rumford Corner.  Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for under 12.  Menu will be  turkey, mashed potatoes, peas, carrots, cole slaw, macaroni salad, stuffing, cranberry sauce, coffee, punch  and pie served family style.  Stair chair on back stairs.  FMI call Joe at  364-4715.

ITALIAN DINNER  Donations will be used to support the Deacon's Fund, which is used to help people in need.  1st seating at 5 p.m. and 2nd seating at 6 p.m. at the E. Otisfield Free Baptist  Church, 231 Revile Rd., off Rte. 121, Otisfield.  Menu will feature spaghetti, macaroni, meatballs, sausages, garlic bread, salads and desserts.

SUPPER  Sponsored by the Paris Fire Dept. Aux.  5 p.m. at the So. Paris Fire Station, Western Ave.  Supper includes casseroles, baked beans, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, salads, rolls and homemade desserts.  There will also be a 50/50 raffle.
