MIND THE BODY   Sponsored by Healthy Oxford Hills.  Action and support group meets from 3-4 p.m. every Thu. at the Weary Club, 385 Main St., Norway. Group’s focus is on feeling good physically and mentally. All are welcome to listen, share stories and feel better.  FMI call 739-6222.

POINTS OF VIEW  Display of paintings by Gail Rein at the  Matolcsy Gallery, Main St., Norway.  Gail has won best of show in both the Norway Sidewalk Show and the Western Maine Juried show this year. Also exhibiting in the same show will be Irina Kahn, president of the Western Maine Art Group, and Suzanne Hardy.  Their “points of view” are flowers and landscapes, respectively.

NOW I LAY ME Down To Sleep  7:30 p.m. on Sept. 27, 28, and 29, and 2 p.m. on Sept. 30. at the Schoolhouse Arts Center, 16 Richville Rd. (Rte. 114), just north of the intersection of Rte. 114 and Rte. 35,  Standish.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors.   This 1-act play was written and directed by longtime high school teacher Jerry Walker.  Not appropriate for younger children due to mature themes.    For reservations, call 642-3743 or buy tickets on-line  at www.schoolhousearts.org.

EXHIBIT   Photography and acrylic paintings by Milt Inman will be exhibited at the W. Paris Library during library hours.  Milt has loaned the library a sampling of his large collection of photographs, the product of a passion that began at a very young age.

CHINESE AUCTION  Proceeds to benefit Responsible Pet Care Shelter & Adoption.  Doors open at 5 p.m. for ticket sales and bidding until 6:30 p.m. at OHCHS.  Over 300 great prizes, a $1 table and refreshments.  Come out and support your local shelter. 

JONES BAND  7-10 p.m. at the Legion Hall, Church St., So. Paris.  Cost is $5 for adults. Band plays old fashioned dance music.  

OUTDOOR WEEKEND  Sponsored by the  Mahoosuc Land Trust in partnership with The UMaine 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Bryant Pond, the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum and Mahoosuc Pathways.  Choice of a hike, bike, paddle, mine tour or trail work session.  Trail workers meet at 9 a.m. at Grafton Loop parking area, Rte. 26, Newry.  Others meet at 10 a.m. at  the home of  Jeff Newsroom and Saranne Taylor. 69 Winslow Rd. (off the Intervale Rd.), Bethel, for  (1) hike to Bucks and Lapham Ledges in Woodstock, (2)  paddle on the Androscoggin from Newt’s Landing to Newsom/Taylor home,  (3)  bike ride on rolling hills and through farmlands in the Bethel area or (4) tour of the Bumpus Mine in Albany.  Meet back at 2 p.m. for a BBQ with   hamburgers and hot dogs provided.  Bring a salad, side or dessert to share.  More details and information at 824-3806 or Facebook.com/mahoosuclandtrust.

YARD SALE   Proceeds to benefit the maintenance fund of both buildings.  8 a.m.-noon at the Wilkin's House, Plummer Hill, next to the church, Waterford. Good selection of books to read on  cold days, plenty of children and adult games, great selection of dishes at low prices and utensils, pots and pans.

CROP WALK   25% of the funds stay locally, going to the Bethel Food Bank and the remaining 75% supports the work of Church World Service.   12:30 p.m. starting at the W. Parish Congregational Church, Bethel.  Walkers are invited for a potluck luncheon at 11:30 a.m. at the church.  FMI call Jane at 357-3524.

FALL SHOOT  Sponsored by the Lake Thompson Fish & Game Club.  10 a.m.-2 p.m. running deer and trap shoot at the club range on the Paine Rd. E. Oxford. Donations will be $.50 per shot for running deer and $1.50 per five shots for the trap shoot ($.50 of this goes towards the cost of clay pigeons.  Event winners will receive 1/2 of the pot.  Refreshments will be on sale and the public is welcome.  FMI  call Don at 539-4407.

NATURE CLUB  Meet at 10 a.m. in the bowling alley parking lot in So. Paris and carpool for a foliage viewing tour to the Andover/Rangeley area.  Bring a picnic lunch and visitors are welcome.  FMI call John  at 539-2902.

October 2

SENIOR SOCIAL and Luncheon   Sponsored and hosted by Town of Harrison Parks and Recreation.  11 a.m.-1 p.m. on the 1st Tues. of each month in the Community Room next to the fire station, Harrison. Luncheon will feature homemade macaroni and cheese, garden salad, homemade apple crisp, juice, coffee or tea. Cost is $3 or donation. If you don’t have time for socializing and games then come for a delicious meal at  noon. Word puzzles and Bingo are always a favorite. SENIORS FORUM  Hosted by the Harrison Historical Society.  7 p.m. at the museum on Haskell Hill Rd., Harrison.  Hear from longtime residents about early life in the area.   FMI call Elaine at 583-2213.

October 6

CRAFT FAIR   9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Oxford Hills Assembly, 298 Coldwater Brook Rd., Oxford, rain or shine.  Tables are for rent for $7 or bring your own table and rent a space for $7.  FMI  call Cheryl at 743-5840.

SILENT AUCTION and Wine Tasting  Fundraiser for the library.  6 p.m. inside and outside under a tent  at the Waterford Library.  Tickets are $3 per person or $5 a couple and are available at the library, at Pie Tree Orchard or from Al at 583-4417, Corinna at 583-2724 or Nancy at 583-6551 and also at the door.  A silent auction will be accompanied by a wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres and entertainment by a brass quintet.  Offerings for the auction will include a variety of art works, antiques, hand made items, home made pies, services, gift certificates and much more. Even the old library catalog will be offered for sale. Black tie is optional.  Anyone with items to donate may contact  Nancy at 583-6551.

October 7

HOUSE/HALEY Concert   Sponsored by the Deacons of the Oxford County United Parish (No. Waterford and E. Stoneham churches) with proceeds to go to the Deacon's Fund so that they may help anyone needing assistance with fuel or food during the winter.  4 p.m. at the No. Waterford Congregational Church,  Rtes. 35 and 37 and opposite Melby's Market.  There will be a good will offering and light refreshments will be served following the concert.

October 11

BETHEL SENIOR CITIZENS  11 a.m. meeting and dinner at the W, Bethel Grange Hall for a meeting and dinner. Reservations must be made before Oct, 3, by calling Caroline at 824-3226 or Arlene at 824-2877.  Price of the dinner is $10.

WHITMAN MEMORIAL Library Program  2 p.m. at the library, Bryant Pond.    Guest speakers will be Robert and Cynthia Kirchherr of So. Paris who will be showing pictures and talking about their trip to So. Africa.  Also sharing pictures and talking about her trip to Namibia will be Elaine Newell of W. Paris.  Elaine spent two weeks in Namibia visiting her daughter who was in the Peace Corps at that time.  These will be two very different and interesting stories about time in Africa.  Free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.

OPEN MIC Poetry Slam  7:30 p.m. at the 1st Universalist Church of Auburn, 169 Pleasant St.   This is free.  Refreshments and children's room available.   FMI call 783-0461.

October 13

HELPING HANDS Work Days  9 a.m.-noon at McLaughlin Garden, 97 Main St., So. Paris.  Participants have a chance to meet new people, learn new gardening skills, and gain the satisfaction of knowing that the time spent helping is greatly appreciated.  Kristin Perry guides volunteers in learning to identify and reduce weeds, how and when to deadhead and prune, and what and how to compost. She also teaches both common and Latin plant names. Workers leave with tips to use in their own yards.

October 16

FOOD FOREST  3-6 p.m. at the Alan Day community garden, Whitman St., Norway.  Scott Vlaun is the leader.

HYMN SING  6:30 p.m. at the 1st  Congregational Church. E. Main St., So. Paris.  Included in the program will be many of the old and new favorite hymns in memory of our loved ones that have passed on or in honor of those who are still with us. 

OCEA-R MEETING  10:30 a.m. at the No. Waterford Congregational Church, Rte. 35.  All retired public school personnel are invited to attend for a brief business meeting before the noon luncheon.  Cost of dinner is $7.   The fundraiser is a book sale, so bring any books in good condition deemed interesting,  John Kimball will be the speaker.

Public Suppers

September 28

FRENCH DINNER  French students' fundraiser for the trip to France in 2013.  Cost will be $15 for adults and $5 for under 12.  Tickets are available at Books N Things, Norway.  6 p.m. at the 1st Congregational Church, E. Main St., So. Paris.   6 courses include crudités, a vegetable appetizer, soupe au pistou, a vegetable soup from France with a type of pesto added, coq au vin, chicken braised in wine with mushrooms and onions, a selection of French cheeses and tarte tatin, an apple tart from the Normandy region of France.  A vegetarian option,  a quiche, will be available for the main course.  All other courses are vegetarian.  Gluten-free alternatives will be provided instead of the 2 courses that use flour.  All produce used in the dinner will be fresh local produce donated by friends and family.  Dinner will be served by OHCHS students.  Tables will be set with linen tablecloths and napkins and the hall will be decorated with a French theme.

September 29

TURKEY SUPPER  5-6:30 p.m. at the VFW Hall, E. Main St. So. Paris.  Cost is $7 for adults and $3 for 12 and under.

October 5

PORK SUPPER  5 p.m. at Deering Memorial Methodist Church, 39 Main St., So. Paris.   Supper also includes apple crisp and ice cream.  Cost id $8 for adults and $4 for under 12.  Ample parking behind the library and the town office.

October 13

TURKEY SUPPER  Proceeds to benefit the Rumford Royal  Arch Chapter #56.  5 p.m. at Blazing Star Lodge, Rte. 232, Rumford Corner.  Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for under 12.  Menu will be  turkey, mashed potatoes, peas, carrots, cole slaw, macaroni salad, stuffing, cranberry sauce, coffee, punch  and pie served family style.  Stair chair on back stairs.  FMI call Joe at  364-4715.
