September 6

MIND THE BODY   Sponsored by Healthy Oxford Hills.  Action and support group meets from 3-4 p.m. every Thu. at the Weary Club, 385 Main St., Norway. Group’s focus is on feeling good physically and mentally. All are welcome to listen, share stories and feel better.  FMI call 739-6222.

September 6, to October 15


EXHIBIT   Photography and acrylic paintings by Milt Inman will be exhibited at the W. Paris Library during library hours.  Milt has loaned the library a sampling of his large collection of photographs, the product of a passion that began at a very young age.

September 7-October 21.

ART SHOW  Presented by the Studio of Landmark Resources.  10 a.m.-1 p.m. opening reception at the Bridgton Community Center, Depot St.  Art Opening:  Fall Art Show featuring Self Portraits.   Art show is self-portraits.  FMI call 647-8396.

September 8

SWINGIN' BEARS Square Dance Club  7-10 p.m. at the OHMS, Pine St., So. Paris.   Admission is $6 per person and non-dancers welcome at no charge.  Joseph Fabian will call Mainstream and Plus levels for the square dancing and Bernie Porter will cue for the round dancing.  Refreshments will be served at intermission and there will be door prizes and a 50/50 drawing.  FMI call Eleanor at 782-4050 or go to  www.squaredanceme.us.

BYOB DANCE  8-12 p.m. at the Harrison VFW Post, Waterford Rd., Harrison.  Admission is $10 per person for 21 and over.  Band will be Back Room Deal.  FMI call Ellen at 583-4558 or 461-4558. 

BOTTLE DRIVE  Proceeds for the Sumner Scholarship Committee.  Volunteers will go door to door to pick up returnable bottles and cans to be donated for the Sumner Scholarship Fund.  Leave your donations in a trash bag near your mailbox or bring them to the Sumner Town Office any time.

ART WORKSHOP  105 p.m. at Fare Share Commons, 447 Main St., Norway.  Artist  Lynn Hazleton will be presenting wearable art from paper.  Donations accepted.

JONES BAND  7-10 p.m. at the Legion Hall, Church St., So. Paris.  Cost is $5 for adults. Band plays old fashioned dance music.  

September 8-30

POINTS OF VIEW  Display of paintings by Gail Rein at the  Matolcsy Gallery, Main St., Norway.  Opening event from 5-7 p.m. on Sept.  7. Gail has won best of show in both the Norway Sidewalk Show and the Western Maine Juried show this year. Also exhibiting in the same show will be Irina Kahn, president of the Western Maine Art Group, and Suzanne Hardy.  Their “points of view” are flowers and landscapes, respectively.

September 9

5K ROAD RACE, 1 Mile Fun Run/Fitness Walk  100% of the proceeds support Dancing Trees’ Staying Warm program.   Registration is at 8 a.m. at the Oxford County Fairgrounds, 68 Pottle Rd., Oxford.   Fast and  flat course, refreshments and awards.  Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.  Register online at www.running4free.com or contact Jacki at 539-2670.   

SOFTBALL GAME  Police Versus Firefighters  Benefit for REACH.    3:30-6 p.m. at the Gouin Field, So. Paris.  Tickets are $3 per person and free for under 12.  Tickets will be sold in advance and at the gate. September 10

AARP MEETING  Noon dinner at the 1st Congregational Church, E. Main St., So.  Paris.  Dinner includes ham and potato salad as well as another vegetable and a special dessert.  Cost is $6.50 and reservations are required by calling Ruth at 744-9069 by Sept. 7.  Business meeting will start at 1 p.m. to be followed by a special program being presented by Greg Cross and another representative from the Portland headquarters.

September 11

POWER PROPAGATORS  2-4 p.m. at McLaughlin Garden, Main St., So. Paris.  Meet in the back corner of the barn. Horticulturist Kristin Perry will teach volunteers how plants can be increased to plant elsewhere. Perry teaches when and how to divide plants, how to replant the divisions, how to choose the right soil mix when plants are to be grown in pots, and how to be successful growing the plant in other places.

SUPPER DANCE  5-9:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, Locke Mills.  Doors open at 4 p.m.  Cost for adults for the supper is $7 and $10 for the supper and dance and $3 for children.  Menu will be baked beans( pea and red kidney), hot dogs( red and natural), potato salad, cole slaw, biscuits and pies.  Music will be by Boulder Ridge.

NATURE CLUB  Meet at 10 a.m. in the Oxford Walmart parking lot (south side near Rte. 26) and carpool to Augusta to view the natural history exhibits at the Maine State Museum and the State House.  Bring a lunch and visitors are welcome.  FMI call John at 539-2902.

HELPING HANDS Work Days  9 a.m.-noon at McLaughlin Garden, 97 Main St., So. Paris.  Participants have a chance to meet new people, learn new gardening skills, and gain the satisfaction of knowing that the time spent helping is greatly appreciated.  Kristin Perry guides volunteers in learning to identify and reduce weeds, how and when to deadhead and prune, and what and how to compost. She also teaches both common and Latin plant names. Workers leave with tips to use in their own yards.

SENIORS Club  11 a.m. at the Bethel Legion Hall, Vernon St., Bethel.  Menu is beef stew and biscuits and the price is $10.  Reservations must be made by Sept. 1, by calling Caroline at 824-3226 or Arlene at 824-2877.

ENVIRONMENTAL MEETING  6:30 p.m. at the Harrison Library.  Come and learn about the proposal to pump dirty tar, sands and oil through the town and also about the health threats to our water, air and soil.  FMI call 583-6304.

BLOOD DRIVE  1-6 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, Gore Rd., Locke Mills.   This is an emergency call for blood.  Call 1-800-REDCROSS for an appointment.

GROW WEEKEND  To be held at the Bryant Pond 4-H Camp.  Cost for the 3 days is $10-80 (based on ability to pay) and includes fresh, locally grown food and rustic but comfortable lodging. DANCE  Sponsored by the Waterford World's Fair.  8-12 p.m. at the Waterford Fairgrounds, Green Rd., No. Waterford.  Band will be Rockin Roadrunners.

HARVEST FEST and Chowdah Cook-off   Presented by Hancock Lumber and the cook-off sponsored by Sysco Foods and Oakhurst Dairy. Event, taking placed at the Bethel Common in Bethel, features 50 arts and crafts vendors, food, music in the gazebo, free horse-drawn wagon rides, chainsaw carving and the chowdah cook-off with local restaurants competing.  FMI go to bethelharvestfest.com.

MAPLE RIDGE Cemetery  1 p.m. annual meeting at 78 Greenwood Mt. Rd., Hebron.   Important business will be on the agenda, including election of officers and trustees. All officers, trustees, and interested parties are invited to attend.  FMI or directions, call 966-2023.

FOOD PANTRY  1-3 p.m. at the W. Paris Baptist Church, 15 Church St.  W. Paris residents invited to come once a month. 

September 21

OCEA-R MEETING  10:30 a.m. social, 11 a.m. business meeting, 12 p.m. lunch and 12:45 p.m. program at the Congregational Church, Rte. 35, No. Waterford. Program will be “Financial Survival in Difficult Times-Broken Promises."  The fundraiser will be donations/book sale.   To reserve a lunch, call 743-7677.

September 21-23

THUMBS UP  Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and show is at 8 p.m. at Celebration Barn Theater, 190 Stock Farm Rd., So. Paris, just off Rte. 117.  Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors, and $8 for students/kids.  Advance sale tickets are highly recommended and may be purchased by calling the Barn’s box office at 743-8452.   This funny and poignant story playfully explores the wisdom of the adage, "You can't get there from here!"

CHINESE AUCTION  Proceeds to benefit Responsible Pet Care Shelter & Adoption.  Doors open at 5 p.m. for ticket sales and bidding until 6:30 p.m. at OHCHS.  Over 300 great prizes, a $1 table and refreshments.  Come out and support your local shelter. 

October 6

CRAFT FAIR   9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Oxford Hills Assembly, 298 Coldwater Brook Rd., Oxford, rain or shine.  Tables are for rent for $7 or bring your own table and rent a space for $7.  FMI  call Cheryl at 743-5840.

Public Supper

September 6

SUPPER  Proceeds to benefit the Scholarship Fund.   Doors open at 5 p.m. and supper is at 5:30 p.m. at the Albany Congregational Church, Hunt’s Corner.   Cost is $7 per person and $4 for 12 and under.  Menu includes baked beans, salads, casseroles, rolls, brown bread and pies.

September 7

HARVEST SUPPER  5-6:30 p.m. at the Lovell UCC, Rte. 5, Center Lovell.   Cost is $9 for adults and $4 for under 12.  Menu includes corned beef, cabbage, beets, carrots, potatoes, turnip, bread, coffee, lemonade and pie.

September 8

FREE DINNER  1st seating at 5 p.m. and 2nd seating at 6 p.m. at the E. Otisfield Free Baptist Church, 231 Rayville Rd., off Rte. 121, Otisfield.  Donations are welcome and will be used for Adult Christian Education.  Menu includes barbecue chicken, vegetables and salads, and desserts.  First come, first served.  

BEAN HOLE BEANS  Supper  5:30 p.m. at the Congregational Church of E. Sumner, Rte. 219. Cost is $7 per person with a $20 family maximum.  Menu also includes hot dogs, brown bread, cole slaw and apple crisp.  There will also be raffle items. Browse hand-carved items and talk to Streaked Mountain Wood Carvers. FMI call Linda at 388-2263.

TURKEY DINNER  5 p.m. at Deering Memorial Methodist Church, corner of Main and Church St. So. Paris.  Cost will be $8 for adults and $4 for under 12.  Dinner  includes the turkey with all the fixin's and homemade pies.  Ample parking behind the library and the town office.   

PUBLIC SUPPER   Fundraiser for the Ladies Auxiliary.  5-6 p.m. at the VFW Post 9328, Waterford Rd. (Rte. 35), Harrison.  Donations appreciated.  Menu includes homemade baked beans, hot dogs, cole slaw, casseroles, salads, pies and beverages.

September 16

SPAGHETTI SUPPER    Benefit for Tim and Gloria Charlton who have had serious health problems and are unable to work.  5 p.m. at the Harrison VFW Hall, Waterford Rd.  At 6 p.m. there  will be an auction and from  7-9 p.m. karaoke by "Tux."  The cost is  $8 for adults, $3 for children and free for under 5.   FMI call 583-4855.
