SCHOOL SALE  10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Thu., Fri. and Sat. at the   Thrifty Gift Shop, 659 Park St.,  So. Paris, 3 miles north of Market Sq, towards W. Paris on Rte. 26.  There will be lots of clothing and accessories, new and gently used, with sizes from infant to adult.

ART SHOW  At the Fare Share Commons Gallery, 447 Main St., Norway.  Participating artists are Anne Bernard, Don Best, Nikki Millonzi, and Om Devi Reynolds.

BERNARD/SHEPLEY Art Show  Artists have agreed to donate 25% of sales to McLaughlin Gardens.  10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Art in the Barn, McLaughlin Gardens. Main St., So. Paris.  Sarah Shepley and Anne Bernard are members of the Commons Art Collective.  Opening reception is Aug. 10, from 5-7 p.m.

EXHIBIT   Photography and acrylic paintings by Milt Inman will be exhibited at the W. Paris Library during library hours.  Milt has loaned the library a sampling of his large collection of photographs, the product of a passion that began at a very young age.

HONEY BEE Club  Meet at 12 p.m sharp at the home of Henry Hamilton in Otisfield for a workshop field trip.  Workshop will be on preparing, medicating and feeding bees for fall and winter and disease.  Bring a pastry and a chair to sit on.  If you are planning on going on this field trip, please RSVP by Aug. 9, by calling John at 743-5009.

DOWNEASTERS Barbershop Chorus  Benefit for Deertrees Theatre.   7:30 p.m. at the theatre, Harrison.  Chorus are singers of fine-quality 4-part harmony a cappella, a number of whom are local and residents of the Lakes Region. 

BLUEGRASS MUSIC  7 p.m. at Franklin Grange 124, Bryant Pond.  Cost is $6 for adults and $2 for under 12.  Joyce Hathaway 674-2259.  Refreshments and beverages will be on for sale and there will be a 50/50 raffle.

YOUTH GROUP Event   Hosted by the 1st Congregational Church Youth Group.  For children ages 7-12 and their families.  4-6:30ish at Range Pond State Park, Poland.  Children and their families should gather at the church's Haskell House in So. Paris at 4:00 pm.  After some get acquainted activities the group will go together to Range Pond State Park for water fun, picnic and outdoor games. MCALISTER/MCALLISTER Reunion   1 p.m.  at the 1st Baptist Church of Paris, the big church on the common on Paris Hill.  Bring a bag lunch and soft drinks, coffee and cake will be served. BREASTFEEDING Class  6:30-8:30 p.m. in the  Harper Conference Center in the Ripley Medical Bldg., 193 Main St., Norway. $10 per couple. Pre-registration with payment required by calling 743-1562, ext. 6951.  For new and experienced mothers. Shannon Nassa will be leading the class, which will cover the facts of breastfeeding, and help to dispel the myths about it.  The group will learn skills for successful breastfeeding, as some infants are born knowing what to do and some need to be taught. Some mothers may take more naturally to breastfeeding while others require more support.  This class will help make people aware of the support services available to breastfeeding mothers. 

SUPPER/DANCE  5-9:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, Locke Mills.  Doors open at 4 p.m.   Cost is $7 for the supper, $10 for supper and dance and $3 for children.  Supper will be breaded chicken chunks, cole slaw, oven roast potatoes, green beans, Jello salads, homemade bread and gingerbread and whipped cream.

HELPING HANDS Work Days  9 a.m.-noon at McLaughlin Garden, 97 Main St., So. Paris.  Participants have a chance to meet new people, learn new gardening skills, and gain the satisfaction of knowing that the time spent helping is greatly appreciated.  Kristin Perry guides volunteers in learning to identify and reduce weeds, how and when to deadhead and prune, and what and how to compost. She also teaches both common and Latin plant names. Workers leave with tips to use in their own yards.

Entertaining for audiences of all ages.


SAFETY DAY  Sponsored by Oxford Hills Fire Prevention and Safety Org. and hosted by Norway Fire Dept. and Norway Firemen's Relief.  9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Norway Fire Station.  Coffee and refreshments will be provided for all who attend at no cost.  There will be door prizes and a raffle.  Local fire departments, rescue and police will do specific activities of their own choice.  It is hoped that there will be a live fire display with fire fighters going into Waterford's Burn Trailer, showing the danger of fire fighting. Please note that Smokey Bear's 75th birthday will be celebrated. 

MUSIC FESTIVAL  Proceeds support DancingTrees’ winter programs.  Doors open at 4 p.m. at the Magic Lantern Theater, Main St., Bridgton.   Tickets $15 and include admission to all shows, dinner and  snacks.  Bottled water, soft drinks, beer and wine available for sale.   This Christmas is for Everyone Music Festival will feature award winning soul blues artist Johnny Rawls and Happy-Hardcore Maine artist, Pete Finkle.   There will also be a Chinese Auction giving away children's bicycles, restaurant gift certificates, gas cards, a helicopter ride and more. 

MORNING COFFEE  8-9:30 a.m. at the Weary Club of Norway, 385 Main St.   If you have always been curious about the Weary Club, possess political wisdom and a Yankee philosophy, you are invited to stop by for coffee and donuts.  Members will be honored to give you a brief history of the club and discuss membership in this unique and historical organization.

POWER PROPAGATORS  2-4 p.m. at McLaughlin Garden, Main St., So. Paris.  Meet in the back corner of the barn. Horticulturist Kristin Perry will teach volunteers how plants can be increased to plant elsewhere. Perry teaches when and how to divide plants, how to replant the divisions, how to choose the right soil mix when plants are to be grown in pots, and how to be successful growing the plant in other places.

PUBLIC BREAKFAST  7-9 a.m. at the  VFW Post 9787 E. Main St., So. Paris.  Cost will be $5 for adults and $3 for 12 and under. 

PUBLIC SUPPER  5-6:30 p.m. at the Heywood Club, at the four corners, Crockett Ridge Rd., Norway.   Cost will be $7 for adults and $3 for 5 and under.  Supper includes baked beans, chicken pies, casseroles, rolls, hot and cold drinks and desserts.

August 14

PUBLIC SUPPER  5-6:30 p.m. at the No. Waterford

Congregational Church, Five Kezars Rd. (off Rtes. 35 and 37 and opposite Melby's Market), Waterford.   Price is $7 for adults and $3.50 for under 12.  Menu will include baked beans, American chop suey, casseroles, salads, brown bread, rolls, beverages and homemade pies.

August 15

BREAKFAST  Proceeds help with the upkeep of the Wilkins House.   7:30-10 a.m. at the  Wilkins Community House, foot of Plummer Hill Rd. and  next to the Waterford Congregational Church.  Cost is $7 for adults, $4 for ages 5-10 and free for under 5.  Breakfast includes scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, donuts, coffee, tea and orange juice.  

LUNCH/BINGO  Noon at theCongregational Church of  E. Sumner,  Rte. 219.   Admission is a can of fruit or vegetables for the food bank.

COMMUNITY LUNCH  11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Otisfield Community Hall.  This will be a flowers and vegetables swap.  Please bring extras. 

August 18

SUPPER  5:30 p.m. at the Congregational Church of E. Sumner, Rte. 219.  $7 per person with a $20 family maximum.  Supper includes bean hole beans, BBQ chicken, salads,rolls, desserts and raffle items. FMI call Linda at 388-2263.

LOBSTER/STEAK FEST  Sponsored by the Oxford Hills Rotary Club with proceeds to benefit the Oxford Hills community. 4-7 p.m. under the tents at OHCHS, rain or shine.  Ticket are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the event. Take-out meals available.  Meal includes lobster or steak, steamers, corn, French fries, beverages and watermelon.  Enjoy live entertainment.  FMI or tickets call George at 743-2285, Dave at 743-7836, or any Rotary member..
