From workshop to stage in Denmark

DENMARK — The Red’n Gold Cabaret, an offshoot of the Singers Workshop, will be presented again on Friday and Saturday, September 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Denmark Arts Center.

This is the 10th annual show by Lillian Lee Morse, director, and is made up of singers, most of whom have been in the workshop productions since 2003. With the purpose of developing good singing techniques and communication skills, they meet every Monday evening to develop these abilities. Some are continually cast in other regional lake area theatres.

For the variety of ages in this group (between 20 and 65, thereabouts), the cabaret was found to be the most entertaining form to present variable song-styles: theatre - stage - swing - oldies - pops - you name it. The director is at the piano while the singers present their own specialties onstage - solos, duets, ensembles.

Spectators are seated café-style, with low candlelight, free popcorn, sodas and snacks (byob). The cast leads songs for audience participation (or not ) and the evening is sparked up with skits here and there.

Admission is $12; proceeds benefit the Denmark Arts Center. For information and reservations, call 452-2412 or 452-2057. Denmark Arts Center is located at 50 W. Main St. in Denmark.

The performers are Teresa Dyer, Susie Mosca, Janet Gill, Sue Farrington, Ginnie Spaulding, David Cronin, Craig Holden, Tom Ferent, Jeremiah Gill and Chaz LaFreniere.

Music highlights include "Yesterdays," "In the Mood," "When I Grow Too Old To Dream," "This Could Be The Start of Something Big," "Lonely House," "Hey, Old Friend," "Send In The Clowns," "Too Many Mornings," "The Physician," "I Got It Bad And That Ain’t Good," "Deep Purple," "What Did I Have That I Don’t Have?," "Stars Fell on Alabama," "Gloomy Sunday," "Let Me Fall" and "Serenade."

Composers include Jerome Kern, Duke Ellington, Stephen Sondheim, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, Kurt Weill, Burton-Lane and Sigmund Romberg.
