Spending by politicians explained

To the Editor:

Why do they spend so much?

I read with great interest the editorial wondering about why politicians spend so much on ads. I think I may have the reason.

Let us look at Congress as an example, a person running for the House will serve two years before needing to face the voters again. During that two years they will earn about $340,000.

Now the question is why spend over a million dollars to get a job that will pay only one third of that? As an example, let's look at Chellie Pingree, her life in boy friend is a billionaire, yet she raised and spent over a million to get reelected. Doesn't make sense does it?

Yet it does, for you see members of Congress are exempt from insider trading laws. It is not the salary candidates are interested in, it is the perks, perks that include insurance, early retirement, and exemption from laws, laws like insider trading.

Imagine knowing in advance which company is going to get a billion dollar contract with the Fed, or knowing where the new super interstate is going and where the interchanges will be. And being able to use that Informatica to buy stocks, real estate or whatever, without having to worry about going to jail.

Jesus said: "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon." Mammon is money and the things bought with money.

Hope this helps shed further light on your editorial.
