Single stream clarification

To the Editor:

I read with interest your article about recycling options now being considered by Oxford County Regional Recycling and the Norway-Paris Solid Waste board (November 4, 2010, by Matt Hongoltz Hetling). I wish them well in their deliberations and would like to take this opportunity to offer a correction to the sidebar, What is Single Stream Recycling?

The sidebar article states, “Currently, there are two such [single stream] plants in Maine,” but, in fact, there is only one: ecomaine’s facility in Portland. The next closest single stream facilities are in Auburn and Charlestown, MA and in Burlington, VT. Therefore, any recycling materials collected for single stream recycling in Maine are either processed by ecomaine or are transported out of state.

We, of course, would much prefer to add value to that collected material right here in Maine at our nonprofit, municipally owned and operated facility.
