Cyberbullying

To the Editor:

Your Person on the Street question last week was, "Should schools be responsible for disciplining students who cyberbully elsewhere?"

Only one of the ten people who responded mentioned the fact that schools should be doing something about the cyberbullying because they are providing the medium for students to do it.

I agree with her. The something that I think schools should be doing is preventing it from happening in the first place by only allowing educational use of the laptop purchased with our tax dollars for just that purpose.

There is no need for those computers to have access to any social networking sites. There is no need for students to be using the school laptop for any e-mailing at all.

What educational value could either of those possibly have? Google docs works well as a medium for students to e-mail work to teachers and I assume the in-house email system (First Class) is closely monitored for misuse.
