Oxford teen charged in fatal West Paris Crash
OXFORD — State Police have charged an Oxford teenager in connection with a double fatal crash earlier this year in West Paris.
Rebecca Mason, 16, of West Paris and Logan Dam, 19, of Norway were killed in the Jan. 7 one-car crash on Route 219.
According to a press release from Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland, 19-year-old Kristina I. Lowe was arrested without incident this morning by Trooper Thomas Welch at her home.
She is charged with two counts of Class A manslaughter, two counts of Class B aggravated operating under the influence, two counts of Class C aggravated driving to endanger, and one count of Class C leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash resulting in death.
If convicted, she faces a maximum of 95 years in jail and fines of more than $100,000.
The investigation by troopers has determined Lowe was reading and/or sending a text message on her mobile phone at the time of the crash. She had also been drinking that night and was speeding, according to police.
Lowe was operating a 2002 Subaru that left the road and vaulted into a stand of trees. According to police, Mason and Dam were passengers in the vehicle and were killed instantly.
A third passenger, 22-year-old Jacob Scaff suffered minor injuries. Lowe was seriously injured.
Both Lowe and Scaff left the crash site when the first responders arrived and the two were later located elsewhere.
Investigators say the four were returning to an underage drinking party in West Paris, in which a number of other teenagers were present. Additional charges in connection with that party and where the alcohol was obtained are likely.
Lowe was taken to the Oxford County Jail in South Paris and is being held on $25,000 bail. She was arraigned May 2.
