Teen programs planned at library

NORWAY - Teens are invited to participate in a book discussion series at Norway Memorial Library that explores the ways families and home shape our personalities, hopes, dreams, and expectations of the world around us. Books chosen are memoirs by writers who have grown up in rural areas. The first book, “The Horizontal World: Growing Up Wild in the Middle of Nowhere” by Debra Marquart, recalls her life on the family farm – chores, her rebellions, attitude toward her parents and siblings, and coming to terms with her love-hate relationship for the Dakota plains. This book discussion will be held on Wednesday, November 17.

“All Over But the Shoutin’” by Rick Bragg will be discussed on Wednesday, December 15. Bragg, who grew up dirt poor in rural Alabama during the ‘60s and ‘70s and won a Pulitzer Prize in 1996 for this book, writes about the love and strength of his mother, raising her three sons after his father abandons them; the dignity of the poor, and his struggle to forgive his father.

This discussion series is open to teens in grades nine-12. Both discussion times are from 2:15-3:30 p.m. For more information, e-mail Allison at norteen.lib.me.us, or call 743-5309 or come in to the Library to sign up for the discussions.
