SOUTH PARIS — Each year the Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation District offers a Native Conservation Plant Sale of Evergreen seedlings, trees, shrubs, ferns, vines, groundcovers and perennials. The proceeds of this sale support the programming offered by the Conservation District in Oxford County.
Conifers (Evergreens) are beautiful trees that also provide valuable timber and windbreaks, while staying green throughout the year. All species will be offered in groups of ten and will be bare rootstock, needing to be planted quickly. Buy for yourself or share with a friend. The Conifers included in this year’s sale include Fraser Fir and Balsam Fir, Colorado Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce and White Spruce, Canadian Hemlock and White Pine.
Also included in the sale are many kinds of Native Conservation Plants such as Bugbane, Dutchman’s Breeches, Hepatica, Spiderwort and Orange Butterfly Weed. Many of these are beneficial to gardeners because they attract butterflies and bees. Fern types include Sensitive, Cinnamon, Royal and Christmas. Grasses, groundcovers and vines include the Virginia Rose, offered as a substitute for Rosa multiflora which has now become an invasive plant in much of Maine. Also on this year’s list is Sweet Fern, Creeping Wintergreen, both Lowbush Blueberry and Lowbush Cranberry, and more.
Thirty-five native trees and shrubs are also available to the public, including Red maple (not to be confused with the red leaf maple), Sugar maple, Serviceberry and Chokecherry, along with old favorites such as Flowering Dogwood, Autumn Blooming Witch Hazel and many more.
