Sherwood to speak at Poland Historical Society

POLAND — The speaker for the Poland Historical Society’s Saturday, February 18 meeting will be Gregory Sherwood. Greg will be speaking on “The History of Metal Detecting." Greg is a graduate of Oxford Hills High School. He took up the hobby of metal detecting after retiring from the Air Force in Colorado and has been detecting since 1998.

Currently a resident of Oxford, Greg is a Trustee for the Paris Cape Historical Society and has previously given talks at the Paris, Norway, Hebron and Minot Historical Societies, as well as using his detecting skills in relic recoveries for a project in support of the Marlborough, NH Historical Society. He has also worked with elementary school students in Alstead, NH on a local history project for a History Channel competition.

To Greg, metal detecting isn't just about the thrill of being the first person to touch an item that may have been lost for a hundred or more years, it is also about learning as much of the history surrounding that item as you can.

This program will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday morning in the Old School House along Route 26, next to the Town Hall. This event is free and open to the public. A meeting will follow and refreshments will be served. For more information, call 998-4391.
