A recipe for life, no matter your age
It seems like a long, long time ago that I was a Kindergarten teacher. In fact…it was… a century ago! Way back in the 20th century!
I absolutely adored my little students. They would come to school smiling with excitement, enthusiasm, ready for learning. It was just wonderful! If you ever need a a boost, work with the little ones, they will make you laugh and smile all day. I sincerely believed that I was a VIP in this world. I was setting the stage for a successful school career for these mini people and I worked diligently for that cause.
What these children didn't know was that their achievements made MY day. When you stop and think about it, is there anything more wonderful than the day a child learns to read, it is amazing!
Later, I read a book called, "All I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten." It was no news to me, why didn't I write that book? Have you ever felt that way? That book, is in fact, a recipe! Like all recipes, if you follow it correctly, you get a successful result. So, dear readers, here is your recipe for the week…no cooking required!
Recipe for Living
Share.
Play fair.
Don't hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Don't take things that aren't yours.
Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush. Wash your hands again.
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.
Take a nap every afternoon.
When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together.
Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: the roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.
Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup - they all die. So do we.
And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned - the biggest word of all - LOOK.
And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out in the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.
What a peaceful world it would be if we followed this recipe and just held hands.
