Bethel Historical fund campaign is crucial

BETHEL — The Bethel Historical Society's 2010 Annual Fund Campaign, which continues through December 31, is one of the most important ways Society members and friends can help continue the good work begun nearly half a century ago and now under way with renewed energy. As plans take shape for the Society's 45th anniversary in 2011, there are many success stories that longtime supporters of the organization can look back on with pride, including the continued preservation of the 1813 Dr. Moses Mason House; the development of a nationally-recognized publications program; the gathering of a unique collection of artifacts, photographs, and archival materials relating to western Mai

In 2009, generous donors contributed more than $48,000 to the Annual Fund in support of the Society's programs, exhibits and activities. This year's goal of $53,000 represents a modest 10 percent increase, and donations totaling more than $37,000 have already been raised. Tax deductible gifts to the Society may be sent to P.O. Box 12, Bethel, ME 04217, and donations by credit card are also encouraged. For more information, please call 800-824-2910 or e-mail the Society's main office at info@bethelhistorical.org.

The Society's 2010 New Year's celebration will take place on December 31, from 5 to 10 p.m. The first event of the evening will be a community potluck supper, which will be held in the exhibit hall of the Dr. Moses Mason House, 14 Broad Street, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Those attending should bring a salad, hot dish or dessert to share. Following the supper, there will be a dragon parade for children around the village common beginning at 7 p.m.; from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. there will be a candlelight open house in the 1813 residence of Dr. Moses and Agnes Straw Mason. Beginning at 7 p.m. and continuing to 8:30 p.m. will be several performances in the exhibit hall by the Senior Players, followed by refreshments and a sing-along with Lynn Arizzi at the piano. An opportunity to roast marshmallows in the yard between the Mason and Robinson houses will also be offered all evening. The New Year's event is free, but anyone wishing to make a donation is encouraged to do so.

Finally, a 20 percent off sale at the Bethel Historical Society's Museum Shop continues Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through the end of December. Located on the first floor of the historic O'Neil Robinson House, the Shop is well stocked with books, gifts and unique items for your holiday giving or for yourself. All Museum Shop purchases help support the Society's programs, exhibits and publications. This special sale also applies to items listed on the Museum Shop page of the Society's website (www.bethelhistorical.org).
