Aprons are topic of meeting
OTISFIELD — When Alice Kimball of Albany died a few years ago, she left her daughters a large box filled with her personal collection of aprons, many of which she had made. Last August, two of the daughters, impressed and inspired by their mother’s thrift and industry, turned the apron collection into a fundraiser for a community building in Albany. On June 7, Alice’s Otisfield daughter, Ethel Turner, will again display the aprons at a fundraising luncheon for the Otisfield Historical Society.
The community luncheon and program, titled simply “Aprons!” will be held on Thursday, June 7, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Community Hall in Otisfield. Those attending are urged to wear a favorite apron. Following a salad luncheon, the three Kimball sisters, who are now Dottie Adams of Hanover, Norma Salway of Albany and Ethel Bean Turner, will present an informative narrative of the history of aprons, which originated in 12th century Europe as a practical means of protecting workingmen’s clothing. After this presentation, those attending will have a chance to tell a story connected with their own aprons.
There will be a $5 charge for this event. Proceeds will go to the Old Town House Preservation Fund. Reservations may be made by contacting Jean Pottle at 627-2244. The organizers wish to emphasize that men and women are equally welcome to attend.
