Church cleans up community

The Spurrs Corner Church of Otisfield held a town cleanup day on Sunday, November 7 from 9 -11a.m. in Otisfield. Pastor Rick Mowery said that members were putting the "serve" in Sunday services by going out into the community to pick up roadside litter during the Sunday morning hours usually reserved for traditional worship. More than 60 members and friends of all ages participated in the event. More than 12 miles of roadways were cleaned with the group picking up over 100 bags full of litter in addition to over thirty tires, assorted furniture, a truckload of scrap metal, hundreds of returnable bottles and even the kitchen sink. A dinner at the church followed the cleanup activities. The Otisfield Volunteer Fire Department provided traffic control and safety equipment. Money from returnable bottles recovered will be donated to the Otisfield Community School.

Pastor Mowery said how exciting it was to see the church family get together to serve the community in such a tangible way and it is expected that this is the first of many such events.
