Nominations deadline nearing for Family Business Awards
PORTLAND — Maine's family-owned businesses are being reminded that the deadline for nominations for the 12th Maine Family Business Awards is approaching. Although completed applications are not due until April 1, nominations are requested by February 26, according to Tom Juenemann, executive director of the Institute for Family-Owned Business.
"Maine-based family-owned businesses with goals to improve their work, and their visibility, may find opportunities through these awards," said Juenemann. This is echoed by those taking part last year, who described the Awards as, "Great advice for families," "Candor and humor really resonated," and "Excellent summary of unique strengths family businesses possess."
The Awards, which take place May 16, not only showcase a firm's achievements, but offer opportunities to network and hear from a nationally prominent speaker, also from a family-owned business. The 2010 Awards drew nearly 300 to learn about finalists in these categories:
* Maddy Corson Award (fewer than 25 employees) to Sweetser's Orchards.
* Leon Gorman Award (25-plus employees) to Marden's Surplus & Salvage.
* Shep Lee Award (community service) to GHM Agency.
Any Maine-based business, with two or more members of the same family operating, or owning, is eligible. Nominations can be made by anyone, whether involved in the business or not. There is no cost to enter.
An independent judging panel selects winners based upon criteria that include business success, positive business and family linkages, contributions to the community and industry, family participation, work environment, communication and innovative business practices or strategies.
While the Awards recognize accomplishments, during the application process they also create opportunities for companies to take a closer look at themselves. And, ultimately, through the eyes of the Awards judges, to better reflect on a firm's challenges and accomplishments.
Nomination forms can be downloaded at www.fambusiness.org or contact the Institute office at 780-5935. The website also contains information for businesses not entering the Awards but interested in the Institute's programs and membership.
