Grant awarded to Mahoosuc Arts Council

BETHEL - The Mahoosuc Arts Council was awarded a grant for $3,300 from the New England Foundation for the Arts through the New England States Touring Program to present the modern dance troupe Adele Myers and Dancers in January of 2011.

“I am interested in people dancing, not dancers moving. I make theatrical narrative nonfiction dance told from a female perspective - usually with a sense of humor. These dances originate from personal experience; I then explore how that experience intersects with popular culture as part of the collective unconscious. These intersections are conveyed through a chunky non-linear collage format combining energetic robust athleticism, everyday gestures and text. I tend toward a social commentary that often asks, why aren’t we being more honest about this?,” stated choreographer, dancer and artistic director Adele Meyers.

The Mahoosuc Arts Council, which has been supporting the advancement of the arts and humanities of the adult communities and school systems of the Greater Bethel area since 1986, will be hosting Adele Myers and Dancers' innovative multi-media work as part of the 2010-2011 Gould Performing Arts Series, Thursday, January 4 at 7 p.m. at Bingham Auditorium on the Gould Academy Campus. The troupe will also perform January 5 for the Telstar Regional Middle and High Schools and for area home schooled and district charter school students.

Founded in 2000, Adele Myers and Dancers is a five-member contemporary dance company combining robust athleticism, theatricality and social commentary. The mission of Adele Myers and Dancers is to create engaging dances that are accessible to a wide range of audience members.

Myers’ choreography has been presented nationally including Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out; Bates Dance Festival; Tanglewood Music Center; Velocity Dance Center; New Haven International Festival of Arts and Ideas; Stonington Opera House; DanceNowNYC; Dance New Amsterdam and Joyce SoHo. Adele Myers and Dancers has received support from the City of New Haven, the State of Connecticut, the LEF Foundation, NEFA’s RDDI series, and the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC).

The grant will go toward covering part of the artist fees to produce the exuberant and exciting performances, which are also supported in part by grants from Gould Academy and SAD #44.

Tickets for the Adele Myers and Dancer are $10 for adults and $6 for children and seniors. If you are a home schooler or parent and would like to be included in the announcements for Mahoosuc Arts Programming, please contact 824-3575, info@mahoosucarts.org or www.mahoosucarts.org.
