Police: Speed involved with fatal crash

MECHANIC FALLS —  State police say speed was the cause of a one-car crash in Mechanic Falls that killed two young people and seriously injured two others on Friday, April 8.

On April 15, state police released a statement that says the car was going "considerably faster than the 35 mile an hour speed limit."

The accident occurred at 9:30 p.m. on Elm Street, near the border of Mechanic Falls and Poland.

Officials say Adam Nile, 19, of Poland, was driving a Volkswagon GTI when it went off the road and collided with a set of trees, hitting on the driver side.

Nile and Britney Lee Wentworth, 18, also of Poland, were both killed, while Zachary Sutton, 21, of South Paris and Rodney Westleigh, 19 of Auburn were in the back seat. Both were transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston following the crash. Sutton was listed in critical condition, while Westleigh was listed in serious condition.

State police are investigating the causes of the crash, but officials from the Department of Public Safety said that two witnesses to the crash saw the car speeding.

Further investigations will include an accident reconstruction by state officials.

This is the third fatal accident involving residents of Poland in the first three and a half months of 2011. A February snowmobile crash on Middle Range Pond left a man from Auburn dead and a 20-year-old Poland man seriously injured, while a head-on car crash on Harris Hill Road in Poland killed a Mechanic Falls teenager.
